Charity Fundraiser
Money Advice Scotland exists to help people in debt, support money advisers, and influence policy. The charity's priorities are:
Supporting money advisers
MAS is a membership organisation and provides training, events, and resources to the
money advice sector. It aims to ensure that money advisers have a platform to report
social policy concerns as well as access to training to ensure they are equipped to carry
out their important role. The charity offers various other types of support for professionals
to help them thrive at a time when demand for advice is increasing.
Helping people in debt. MAS believes everyone in debt deserves to be treated fairly. Debt can happen to anyone and MAS understands how debt can affect someone's life which is why MAS is working tirelessly towards securing fairer practices for people in debt.
Influencing policy. MAS works to be a strong voice for consumers and people in debt in Scotland by identifying detriment and acting on it. By working closely with its members, it can identify causes of harm to consumers at an early stage. It is an advocacy and lobbying organisation and provides a strong and persuasive voice for the advice sector, ensuring members' views are heard.
Improving financial well being. MAS also works to help people improve their financial capability by delivering workshops to schools, colleges, and workplaces across Scotland.
FINANCES
Money Advice Scotland is in a stable financial position. It has a turnover of circa £900,000 per year. It has 6 months of running costs in reserve and a current surplus in the first quarter of the year of £38,000. MAS receives 100% of its funding from government but is in the process of developing a more diverse income generating strategy to mitigate against the risk of reduced statutory funding.
THE ROLE OF FUNDRAISER
The Fundraiser will be supported by the CEO and the other 16 staff to develop a range of
income channels, from community and events to grants and trusts. The Communications
Officer will support social media content. There is an established team of volunteers who
will be instrumental in delivering community based income. This will leave more time for
the Fundraiser to focus on grants income. A loose £100,000 annual target has been set
which will be a shared responsibility across the organisation. This has been achieved and
surpassed in previous years.
The money is principally needed to support the Finwell service.
To ensure every young person can access financial education workshops and resources at every step of their education, MAS work closely with schools, colleges, universities andcommunity groups across Scotland. These sessions provide money guidance: informative and interactive sessions and workshops that break down various financial topics, making them less complicated and providing useful information
