Birmingham, Birmingham, United Kingdom West Midlands Fire Service Full time £25,000 - £40,000 per year

Prevention Lead Practitioner (Temporary)

Technical 3A Publish date: Tuesday 4 November 2025 Closing date: Tuesday 18 November 2025 at Salary: Term time 30 weeks, 4 days a week 9.00am to 4.00pm Hours: 28 hours per week Tuesday to Friday Overview

West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) is the second largest fire and rescue service in England, serving an area of 902km square and a population of more than 2.9 million people.

Our vision is 'Making the West Midlands safer, stronger and healthier'.

This vision and the strategic goals outlined in 'Our Strategy' are what drives the people, professionalism and pride with which we serve our communities.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Prevention team as a Prevention Lead Practitioner. Working under the Education Delivery Support Officer, and aligned with the Prevention Strategy and Community Risk Management Plan, this role ensures that initiatives focus on those most at risk and vulnerable to fires and other emergencies.

The postholder will supervise and support Prevention Practitioners and Volunteer Advocates, oversee the safe and effective delivery of education across WMFS sites and external settings, and manage all aspects of programme delivery — including preparation, resources, debriefs and evaluation — to maintain high-quality, impactful learning outcomes.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • lead and coordinate the daily delivery of prevention education programmes and manage resources effectively
  • supervise and support practitioners and volunteers to ensure high-quality delivery
  • oversee safeguarding, health and safety, and ensure accurate administration of all education programmes.

Essential skills or experience

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • experience and knowledge of working with children, young people, adults and/or community groups in formal or informal settings
  • skills in leading and supervising others
  • experience delivering and presenting workshops or training sessions
  • a full UK driving licence.

Desirable skills or experience

It would be advantageous to have:

  • awareness of working within the field of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)
  • understanding of programme planning, monitoring and evaluation processes that measure outcomes
  • experience and evidence-based practice in delivering programmes or workshops to children, young people or community groups.

Benefits

We offer a friendly working environment and benefits including:

  • free, on-site gym facilities
  • free, on-site parking.

We also offer access to an in-house occupational health (OH) facility, including OH health and fitness advisors, sports therapists, physiotherapists, cognitive behavioural therapy practitioners and counsellors.

In addition, employees have access to:

  • 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme
  • wellbeing programmes
  • 'blue light' discounts across many retailers, through partner schemes
  • Sports and Welfare scheme (for a small fee), with access to discounted products and services.

Diversity

We welcome applications from all eligible candidates. However, as women and Black and minority ethnic employees are currently under-represented in our service, we particularly encourage applications from these groups.

WMFS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults. We expect the same of every staff member. Successful candidates will be subject to necessary pre-employment checks, including - where applicable - relevant level Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, qualifications, medical clearance, identity and right to work. All applicants will be required to provide two suitable references. How to apply

To apply, please complete the application questions outlining your skills and experiences in line with the job description (linked below).
