Job Description: Senior Development Mid Market Underwriter

Role Overview.

The Senior Development Mid Market Underwriter is responsible for driving profitable growth within the mid‑market segment by underwriting complex risks, developing broker relationships, and expanding market presence. This role blends technical underwriting expertise with business development skills, ensuring disciplined risk selection while actively contributing to portfolio growth. As a senior member of the team, the underwriter also plays a key role in mentoring colleagues and shaping underwriting strategy.

Key Responsibilities


• Underwriting Excellence


• Assess, price, and underwrite mid‑market risks across Property & Casualty and specialty lines.


• Apply sound judgment to ensure risk selection aligns with company appetite and profitability targets.


• Negotiate terms and conditions with brokers to secure sustainable business.


• Maintain compliance with underwriting guidelines and regulatory standards.


• Business Development


• Build and strengthen relationships with brokers and clients to drive new business opportunities.


• Identify growth areas within the mid‑market segment and contribute to product development initiatives.


• Represent the company at industry events, broker meetings, and market forums.


• Collaborate with sales and distribution teams to deliver tailored solutions.


• Portfolio Management


• Monitor and manage the performance of the mid‑market book of business.


• Analyse trends, loss ratios, and market dynamics to inform underwriting strategy.


• Contribute to planning and forecasting for the segment.


• Leadership & Mentoring


• Support junior underwriters through coaching and technical guidance.


• Share market insights and best practices to enhance team capability.


• Act as a role model for underwriting discipline and broker engagement.

Qualifications & Experience


• Significant underwriting experience in the mid‑market segment, ideally across P&C and related lines.


• Strong track record of profitable risk selection and portfolio growth.


• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain broker relationships.


• Experience mentoring or coaching junior underwriters.


• Professional qualifications (e.g., ACII or equivalent) preferred.
