Are you a seasoned payroll professional ready to lead from the front? Our client – a nationally recognised institution – is seeking an experienced Payroll & Benefits Team Leader to join their People Operations team on a 2-year fixed-term contract.

Location: York (Hybrid working – on-site Wednesdays and Thursdays)

Salary: £37,000–£40,000 per annum

Contract: 2-Year FTC

Hours: 35 hours per week (part-time considered)

About the Role

You'll lead a small but mighty payroll team delivering accurate and timely monthly payroll for a diverse workforce. You'll play a key role in ensuring payroll compliance, managing third-party providers, and overseeing the delivery of a high-quality employee experience.

This is an ideal opportunity for a hands-on payroll leader who thrives in a collaborative environment and wants to make a meaningful difference in day-to-day operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on all aspects of monthly payroll processing and year-end tasks
  • Oversee data accuracy for new starters, leavers, and contract changes
  • Manage and develop a team of payroll administrators
  • Be the point of escalation for complex payroll queries
  • Collaborate with People, Finance, and external providers to improve processes
  • Ensure full compliance with current payroll legislation and HMRC requirements
  • Drive payroll automation and process improvements
  • Administer pensions and benefits schemes effectively

About You

  • Strong experience delivering end-to-end UK payroll
  • Previous experience in a supervisory or team lead role
  • Excellent knowledge of UK payroll legislation
  • Proficient in managing relationships with system vendors and payroll bureaus
  • Confident handling complex cases and stakeholder queries
  • Detail-oriented with strong numerical and analytical skills
  • CPP qualified or equivalent
  • iTrent systems experience
