This position is eligible for a hybrid work model. When attending an event or meeting in person, your primary office location will be based out of City Hall, 426 Brant Street, Burlington, Ontario. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands. Effective 2026 this role will be required to be on site 50% of the time each month.
Position Overview
This position is responsible for the design, development and renewal projects of park and trail infrastructure to support other service areas. Your work will aid in the optimization of park asset life cycle to have a positive impact on budget, park user experience, health and safety, and reduction of risk. You will also lead studies and a range of initiatives, working collaboratively with other City departments, outside agencies, and the public.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
Designing parks and trails to protect the environment with a safe and resilient design that adapts to climate change, enhances park diversity, and complies with legislated, provincial, and corporate standards, while integrating public engagement feedback.
Leading major capital projects through all phases of project management, including planning and scheduling, contract administration, cost estimation and budget preparation, public notifications, site inspections, and project closeout. You will also coordinate with various stakeholders throughout project.
Overseeing consultants engaged in capital projects and studies to ensure project tasks and deliverables are realized. Reviewing work from a technical and administrative perspective to ensure that design and tender documents are complete and meet engineering, landscape architectural and corporate standards.
Financial control of projects, including reporting when budget areas are outside tolerance levels, documentation, account set up and closure.
Responding to public, staff and elected official inquiries and complaints, to resolve matters, including participation in decisions or actions taken.
Preparing and authoring reports and recommendations for City Council consideration and representing the department at corporate and community meetings and functions on related assigned projects.
Supporting the delivery of corporate initiatives and strategic park plans, such as the Community Trails Strategy and Integrated Mobility Plan.
Participating in studies, working groups, and interdepartmental projects that support park planning, provisioning, and corporate goals.
Providing landscape architectural expertise to other departments for corporate projects and other departmental circulations.
Contributing to the Parks capital budget process and asset management planning.
Requirements
You have a university degree in Landscape Architecture or a related field. Registration with the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (O.A.L.A.) and Canadian Association of Landscape Architects (C.S.L.A.) This is combined with two (2) to four (4) years relevant years practical experience. Experience with AutoCAD and GIS is required.
To be successful, you possess strong design skills and knowledge of the landscape architecture field. You also demonstrate effective project management skills, and take pride in your communication, problem-solving and time management skills.
This position may require occasional travel between sites and/or City facilities and must provide own transportation.
