We are looking a doctor to work and train as a Trust Grade doctor (F2 level) in Emergency Medicine.

This is a 12 month post commencing December 2025. This post is ideal for qualified doctors with experience.

The post will be based at the ED of the Princess Royal University Hospital which is a designated Trauma Unit and Hyper-acute Stroke Centre (BR6 8ND).

The post holders will work up to 44.3 hours per week (including night shifts and weekend duties). Accommodation may be available.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic emergency workforce treating a wide spectrum of emergency medicine presentations. This is a great opportunity to broaden your experience while working in a friendly and supportive environment.

The primary duties of the post are to see new patients within the Emergency Department, with ready access to supervision from more senior staff and dedicated teaching opportunities.

The ED consultant team provides clinical supervision and care delivery 16 hours per day, 7 days a week. They also have varied special interests including trauma, frailty, disaster medicine, education, public health, global health and pre-hospital care.

There is a strong training culture incorporating lecture-room teaching and clinical supervision, opportunities to attend relevant clinics and courses, and full immersion simulation sessions.

There are also opportunities for flexible working and career progression to a more senior grade.

Teaching and Audit

  • There is a regular ED training programme facilitating each doctor to acquire the knowledge and skills required in emergency medicine. This includes lecture-room teaching, clinical supervision, attendance at relevant clinics and courses, and full immersion simulation sessions. Special focus is given towards the passing of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine examinations.
  • Involvement in a clinical audit and/or quality improvement project will be expected.
  • Study leave can usually be arranged, provided sufficient notice is given, for educational activities relevant to emergency medicine. Relevant study-leave includes life-support courses, other emergency medicine courses, and preparation for exams.
  • Funding is available for educational activities such as the courses outlined above.

Continuing Professional Development

  • There will be regular appraisals and mentoring with an engaged and motivated Emergency Medicine Consultant.
  • The post holder will be expected to give time and attention to acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary for work in the Emergency Department.
  • If required, support will be provided to obtain the Certificate of Readiness to Enter Specialty Training (CREST).

THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

The workload of the Emergency Department is typical for a suburban hospital, with a particular emphasis on medicine and paediatrics. The Emergency Department receives about 80, 000 attendances per year, with another 40,000 attending the Urgent Care Centre.

Reception and Ambulatory Area

The Emergency Department shares a front door with a co-located Urgent Care Centre which provides an initial streaming service for all patients not arriving by ambulance.

The Emergency Department Reception and Adult Waiting Area gives access to a Nurse Triage room, a phlebotomy room and an ambulatory assessment and treatment area.

Majors

Following refurbishment, the majors area has 21 single cubicles including an isolation room with lobby and en-suite toilet.

Resuscitation Room

There are four fully equipped Resuscitation bays with full invasive monitoring facilities. One bay is specifically equipped for the treatment of children.

Paediatric Area

This area was recently refurbished to provide separate facilities for nurse triage, a children's waiting area, and 7 cubicles including one high dependency room.

Ambulatory Decision Unit

This unit is immediately adjacent to the Emergency Department and has capacity for 15 recliner chairs. Patients are admitted under the care of the ED consultants on pre-defined clinical pathways for observation, treatment, or further diagnostic evaluation to support a safe discharge.

Diagnostic Imaging

The imaging department is located immediately behind the Emergency Department, with facilities for plain films and CT (24 hours) and Ultrasound and MRI (limited hours). Advanced imaging is a Consultant delivered service 24/7. A mobile Ultrasound machine is available for the exclusive use of trained Emergency Department doctors.

Administration and Teaching

Offices for Emergency Medicine Consultants and senior nurses, and administrative and support staff are co-located with the Emergency Department. There is an Emergency Department Seminar Room with audio visual and IT equipment.

Relatives Room

There is a relative's room for family members of critically ill patients.4. CLINICAL ORGANISATION

Medical students in the ED

There is active undergraduate teaching (KCL medical students at different stages of their training and elective medical students from all over the world) in both departments.

Undergraduate medical student teaching is provided in the following ways in addition to shop floor teaching:

  1. Twice weekly sessions (year 4) for those in EMTL module

  2. Supervision of student Selected Components (year's 2,3 & 4)

  3. Facilitating Problem Based Learning (Scenarios-year 3)

  4. Examining for OSCEs (year 3 – 5)

  5. Acting as Clinical Adviser to students (year 3 – 5)

Postgraduate teaching and training in the ED

There are protected weekly teaching sessions for all grades of doctors. Higher specialist training in Emergency Medicine includes weekly teaching sessions, regional monthly meetings, a journal club, and participation in clinical audit both in the department and Trust-wide. There are protected weekly teaching sessions for Junior and Middle Grade doctors with input from Emergency Medicine Consultants and others.

Interdisciplinary teaching and learning

Interdisciplinary and multi-professional teaching and learning is actively encouraged in the department. Nursing students, Radiography students and other Allied Health Professionals rotate through the department as part of their training. In addition, London Ambulance Technicians and Paramedics are regularly seconded to the Department as part of their initial and/or refresher in-hospital training.

Resuscitation training

The Resuscitation Teaching Programme for staff of King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and students of the allied professional schools is organised by Resuscitation Training Officers. The Department offers training on all life support courses- ATLS, ALS, ILS and APLS are run several times a year.
