About us

National Gas is securing Britain's energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.

About the role

Are you ready to play a pivotal role in securing Britain's energy future and driving the transition to net zero? At National Gas, we're not just transporting gas, we're powering homes, businesses, and the journey to a cleaner, greener tomorrow. Join us as we invest in groundbreaking hydrogen projects like Project Union and East Coast Hydrogen, and help us deliver the infrastructure that will define the next era of energy.

As a Senior Process Engineer, you'll be at the heart of our Net Zero programme, providing expert process engineering input, technical leadership, and assurance across major projects. Your work will ensure that our new and repurposed infrastructure meets the highest standards of safety, reliability, and compliance, enabling the UK's energy transition and supporting industrial competitiveness.

What you'll be doing
  • Acting as the process engineering technical authority for assigned projects and assets, ensuring designs meet standards, regulatory obligations, and best industry practice.
  • Reviewing, verifying, and approving process engineering designs from internal teams and external contractors.
  • Providing technical assurance through all project phases: concept, FEED, detailed design, construction, and commissioning.
  • Ensuring compliance with national and international codes and standards (IGEM, API, ASME, ISO, etc.).
  • Supporting the development and application of corporate engineering standards and specifications.
  • Analysing key process documents (PFDs, P&IDs, cause and effect diagrams, simulations, design basis reports).
  • Evaluating process safety aspects, including pressure relief, hazardous area classification, and SIL assessments.
  • Leading or contributing to hazard studies (HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA) and risk assessments.
  • Collaborating with project engineers and stakeholders to ensure fit-for-purpose designs.
  • Capturing lessons learned and operational feedback to drive continuous improvement.
About you

You're a confident communicator and a natural collaborator, able to translate complex technical concepts for diverse audiences. Your proactive approach and problem-solving mindset mean you thrive in fast-paced, high-impact environments where your expertise truly makes a difference.

  • Proven track record delivering or assuring engineering design packages across the full project lifecycle.
  • Deep knowledge of process safety principles and application in high-pressure systems.
  • Familiarity with compressor stations, above ground installations, pressure regulating and metering systems, gas blending, or decarbonisation technologies.
