Job Purpose
The News Channel delivers live and breaking news to audiences across the UK and around the world, 24 hours a day. As a Journalist, you are at the forefront of the operation, driving stories from pitch to delivery. You'll propose stories and guests, take ownership of coverage and build sequences. When a story breaks, you will book guests who can deliver in-depth analysis, react to breaking news, give eyewitness accounts or who can take stories forward with exclusive news lines. You'll prioritise accuracy and trust, protecting the BBC's reputation, and collaborate with colleagues across the BBC to maximise the value of our content and ensure its reach across the organisation.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM

You'll be working in heart of the BBC's newsroom on our rolling news operation, delivering high end coverage of the biggest global and domestic stories of the day. It's fast-paced and demanding work. You'll get opportunities to pitch creative treatments and build engaging TV sequences, as well as fixing news-making and agenda-setting guests.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITES AND IMPACT

  • Pitching ideas for news coverage, and guests for planned and breaking news stories.
  • You will be production savvy, work quickly to build visual sequences, graphics and live content.
  • You will work well under pressure, have a good contacts book and be able to hit the phones quickly during breaking news events. You will be persuasive, and know how to encourage guests to speak to the BBC and share their insights.
  • You will understand the importance of live and breaking news for the BBC News channel, BBC Online and iPlayer, and have ideas about stories and treatments that would appeal to audiences on these platforms.
  • You are a curious and efficient problem solver, a team player that considers the various viewpoints people around you have on global topics. You will be a multi-skilled producer who thrives under pressure and can deliver on hourly deadlines.

Your Skills And Experience – Key Criteria

  • Extensive experience working in a newsroom
  • Good production skills and knowledge of production tools
  • Strong editorial judgement
  • Good knowledge of news and current affairs and plugged into the stories of the moment
  • A good contacts book
  • Proven experience writing scripts and briefs
