Creative web designer

Watford, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom The VIP - Violence Intervention Project Full time £25,000 - £40,000 per year

VIP is a violence reduction charity entering an exciting new phase We're looking for a creative web designer to help transform our website into a more inspiring, engaging and visually powerful platform that showcases our impact and The Shame Initiative.

What difference will you make?

Our website is often the first point of contact for funders, partners, and professionals — yet it currently doesn't do justice to who we are or the impact we make. Having a skilled web designer will completely transform how we present ourselves to the world.

A redesigned website will help us communicate our story with clarity, emotion, and professionalism. It will enable us to showcase the power of our work with young people and bring our new
Shame Initiative
to life — positioning it as a national resource for training and consultancy.

Right now, we have no in-house design or communications team, so your expertise will give us the confidence and tools to reach new audiences and make a stronger case for support. It will also help the young people we work with feel proud of how their stories and achievements are represented.

The impact will be long-lasting your work will strengthen our visibility, attract funding, and help us influence how services across the UK understand and address the role of shame in violence. You'll be helping a small grassroots charity step into its next chapter — and giving our mission a platform worthy of its potential.

What are we looking for?

We're looking for a creative, practical, and values-driven
web designer/developer
who can both design and build a refreshed version of our existing WordPress site. You'll understand how to blend strong visual design with simple functionality, and you'll enjoy helping a small, purpose-led team bring their story to life online.

Essential Skills And Experience

  • Strong experience designing and building websites in WordPress, ideally using visual builders such as Elementor, Divi, or similar.
  • Ability to create an engaging, contemporary look and feel that's consistent with our new brand direction.
  • Understanding of user experience (UX) and accessibility principles, ensuring the site works for different audiences and devices.
  • Experience structuring content clearly and creating easy-to-use page templates.
  • Confidence setting up a site that can be easily updated by non-technical staff once launched (training or documentation support appreciated).
  • Good communication skills and a collaborative approach — able to guide us through design decisions and offer creative ideas.

Desirable

  • Experience working with charities, social enterprises, or small mission-driven organisations.
  • Familiarity with integrating contact forms, donation buttons, or newsletter sign-ups.
  • A flair for visual storytelling and an eye for detail.

We're a small, friendly team and we'll give you the space to be creative. You'll work directly with our CEO and Funding Manager, with real flexibility to shape the project. The most important thing is that you believe in our mission to reduce violence through shame-informed practice — and want to help us tell that story beautifully and effectively online.

What will you be doing?

About Violence Intervention Project (VIP)
The Violence Intervention Project is a small, dynamic charity working to reduce violence and transform young lives. Our team of around 13 staff deliver urban therapy — a relational, community-based approach supporting young people aged 12–25 affected by violence, trauma, and social exclusion.

After eight years of frontline delivery, we're entering an exciting new phase. Alongside our direct work with young people, we're launching
The Shame Initiative
— a training and consultancy arm designed to share our practice nationally and help professionals understand how shame operates as a driver of violence.

Despite our strong impact, our website doesn't yet capture the energy, insight, and hope at the heart of what we do. We're looking for a volunteer
web designer
who can help us change that.

What will you be doing?
We want to transform our current website into a more inspiring, engaging, and visually coherent platform that tells our story powerfully to multiple audiences — young people, funders, commissioners, and partners.

Your key responsibilities and deliverables will include

  • Refreshing the design and structure of our website to make it modern, accessible, and easy to navigate.
  • Developing a clean visual style that reflects our new brand direction, including The Shame Initiative.
  • Helping us tell our story through powerful layout, imagery, and user experience — moving beyond text-heavy content.
  • Advising on structure and flow, ensuring clear pathways for different audiences (e.g., funders, young people, professionals).
  • Optimising the site for accessibility and responsiveness across mobile and desktop.
  • Supporting with key assets and templates, such as page headers, icons, and call-to-action graphics.

Who You'll Be Working With
You'll work primarily with our
Funding Manager, Director of Operations
and
CEO
, who will provide content and direction, as well as with our new volunteer graphic designer (if appointed) to ensure brand consistency. Our team is small and friendly — most of us are practitioners rather than communications specialists — so we're looking for someone comfortable guiding us through the design process and helping us make confident, creative choices.

What difference will you make?
This role will have a huge impact on how we communicate and grow. A well-designed, inspiring website will

  • Bring our frontline work and young people's stories to life.
  • Help us attract new funders, supporters, and partners.
  • Launch The Shame Initiative as a credible, professional offer.
  • Build trust and understanding around the idea that tackling shame can reduce violence.

By lending your skills, you'll help a small, purpose-driven charity amplify its message, influence national practice, and ultimately support more young people to live safer, fuller lives.
