About the Role

We are seeking an experienced 
Revenues & Benefits Officer
 to join our local authority team, supporting the efficient and accurate administration of 
Council Tax
 and 
Housing Benefit / Council Tax Reduction
.

You will be responsible for delivering a high-quality, customer-focused service, ensuring compliance with legislation, local policies, and best practice while maintaining high levels of accuracy and productivity.

Key Responsibilities

Revenues

  • Administer and process Council Tax and Business Rates accounts, including billing, discounts, exemptions, reliefs, recovery, and enforcement actions.
  • Handle changes of address, liability queries, direct debit instructions, and refunds.
  • Maintain accurate account information and ensure timely updates.

Benefits

  • Assess and process new claims and changes of circumstances for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction schemes.
  • Verify claim information in line with statutory requirements and local procedures.
  • Identify and calculate overpayments, classify them correctly, and take appropriate recovery actions.

Customer Service & Communication

  • Provide clear, accurate advice to customers via phone, email, and written correspondence.
  • Liaise with internal teams, landlords, government departments, and external agencies as required.
  • Handle complex enquiries with sensitivity, professionalism, and confidentiality.

Compliance & Performance

  • Work within all relevant legislation, including Housing Benefit regulations, Council Tax and NNDR legislation, Data Protection, and local policies.
  • Meet agreed performance targets, accuracy standards, and deadlines.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and service development.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Previous experience in a Revenues, Benefits, or similar local government role is 
    essential
    .
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant legislation (Council Tax, NNDR, Housing Benefit, CTR).
  • Experience using 
    Civica
     is desirable, but we welcome applicants with experience on 
    any Revenues & Benefits system
     (e.g., Northgate, Academy, Capita) who can demonstrate the right skill set.
  • Excellent numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work to high accuracy.
  • Confident communicator with exceptional customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a busy caseload in a remote/hybrid environment.
