Cataloguing Assistant (The Annan Collection)

Full-time and Fixed Term (22 months from January 2026)

Salary £27,363 - £28,491 per annum (pay award pending) plus generous benefits package

On-site

About the role

Are you passionate about photography, history, and uncovering stories hidden in collections? Do you already have experience of cataloguing or working in a research environment? This is your chance to play a key part in bringing one of Scotland's most remarkable photographic collections to life.

We have a rare opportunity to join our Collection & Research team to support the cataloguing of The Annan Collection. This is an extraordinary archive spanning over 150 years of photographic history.

We're looking for someone who brings strong organisational skills, a keen eye for detail, and confidence using digital tools to record and manage information accurately. You'll be a clear communicator who enjoys working collaboratively as part of a team, while also taking initiative when working independently.

You'll have a qualification in art history, the history of photography, or demonstrable knowledge of a subject area relevant to The Annan Collection, along with some experience of cataloguing or working in a research environment, which can come from any background.

You'll be at the heart of a major project to create catalogue records and support the digitisation of the collection objects. This will give you the chance to build on your current research skills and grow your knowledge of photography collections. You'll develop detailed insight of the photographs, negatives, archive documents, camera equipment and ephemera held in the collection.

Importantly you will facilitate access to the collection for internal colleagues and external individuals and groups to help make the collection accessible to a wide public audience. Additionally, you will help work towards a public display of the material from The Annan Collection.

About The Annan Collection

In 2023, the National Galleries of Scotland acquired a preeminent collection of material dating from the 1840s to the 1990s relating to the Scottish photographer Thomas Annan , his sons John and James Craig Annan and their Glasgow-based family business, T & R Annan and Sons. The Annan Collection is exceptional both in its breadth and contents. It represents the history of photography from local, national, and international perspectives and it provides tremendous opportunities for research and display. The collection, acquired from the Annan family, contains exquisite examples of photography as well as a wealth of material pertaining to the technical art history of photography and printmaking, including archive documents, camera equipment, and negatives.

The difference you'll make

Reporting to the Curator of Photography your responsibilities will include:

  • Cataloguing The Annan Collection to agreed, high standards.
  • Liaising with internal colleagues to facilitate the digitisation of the collection objects.
  • Working with colleagues across the organisation to enhance access to The Annan Collection, including facilitating access for external researchers and partnering with community groups.
  • Supporting Curatorial colleagues with the research and interpretation of the catalogued collection and assisting with preparations for public displays of objects from The Annan Collection.
  • Ensuring a high standard of care, access, and security for the works in the collection.
  • Retrieval and re-shelving of material as required.
  • Answering enquiries from the public, in person, by phone and email as they relate to The Annan Collection.
  • Assisting with the physical management of The Annan Collection and collection audit activity. Undertaking specific house-keeping tasks, as required, including best practice in the handling and preservation of collections.
  • Assisting with collection readiness of The Annan Collection for The Art Works.

Who we are looking for

To succeed in this role, you'll need the following range of knowledge, skills, and experience:

  • A qualification in art history, the history of photography or demonstrable knowledge of a subject area relevant to The Annan Collection.
  • Some experience of cataloguing or working in a research environment, which can come from any background.
  • Excellent organisational skills with strong attention to detail, especially accuracy in record keeping and data input.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and communicate effectively with colleagues across the organisation.
  • Proactive approach with the ability to take initiative and follow instruction independently.
  • Experience of dealing positively and effectively with visitor enquiries.
  • Proven IT skills in particular MS Excel.
  • A commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and an interest in making museums and galleries more welcoming and representative of different communities.

It would also be great if you have:

  • Knowledge of photography printing processes and techniques.
  • An interest in the history of photography, particularly dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
  • Practical experience of object handling in a museum/gallery context.
