**Summary**:
SLIC co-ordinates legal information and library facilities for the Scottish Government Legal Directorate (SGLD) and, where appropriate, the Government Legal Service for Scotland (GLSS) and associated offices. It also acts as a forum for the development of legal information initiatives and knowledge management as well as providing a legal research facility. It includes amongst its resources a comprehensive hard copy legal library and an extensive range of networked electronic products. The branch comprises a C1 Senior Librarian and two B2 Librarians supported by an A3 Administration Assistant. This B1 post is a new post to join the team. The role of the Assistant Librarian is to support the smooth running of SLIC services through provision of legal research and current awareness services in addition to general library management tasks such as cataloguing, stock management/circulation and financial administration.
**Fixed term appointment for 12 months.**
**Job description**:
- Whilst the post is substantially based in the Solicitors Legal Information Centre undertaking library duties, there will also be some cross branch working to support other teams within the Business Division as well as work in the Scottish Law Commission Library. Currently the team are transitioning to a hybrid working model, with some on-site work being required for specific duties.
- The key duties of the post include:
- Providing and maintaining an excellent legal research and enquiry facility
- Producing current awareness bulletins and updates
- Ensuring that collections are organised and managed effectively by cataloguing materials to in-house cataloguing standards, using the KOHA library management system
- Oversight of circulation of stock, including assisting users with loans/returns; shelving of library materials and maintaining hardcopy collections
- Co-ordinating the library serials, including oversight of journal, law report and loose-leaf subscriptions, and some loose-leaf updating
- Assist with financial processes including payment of invoices, credit card holder for the branch and recording branch expenditure
- Assisting B2 librarians with IT Product Training and User Education, including administration of training events
- Providing administrative support to SGLD Knowledge Management Group (of which SLIC team are members), including coordinating meetings, circulating papers and minute taking.
- Editing and contributing to the SGLD knowledge management SharePoint platform
**Responsibilities**:
**Essential Criteria**
1. Experience in library work, preferably in a legal library setting, with a CILIP professional accreditation or willingness to work towards this.
2. Experience of work in a library or information service environment (experience of legal library work would be advantageous).
3. Excellent organisational and time management skills with ability to balance competing priorities.
4. Good interpersonal, networking and team-working skills with the ability to engage confidently with colleagues/stakeholders at all levels.
