Role – Health Care Assistant - Theatre

Job Summary:

The Ophthalmic Theatre Healthcare Assistant supports the surgical team in the ophthalmic theatre by preparing the environment, assisting with procedures, and ensuring patient care and safety. Our staff are committed to providing high standards of individualized care for the people who use our services, whilst maintaining their privacy and dignity at all times. An ageing population means there are more and more incidences of age-related diseases of the eye. These eye diseases can be successfully treated if caught early, and can be managed effectively with existing treatments and medicines. This role involves working closely with surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality care to patients undergoing eye surgery.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Preparation: Assist in preparing patients for surgery, including positioning and ensuring comfort.

Theatre Preparation: Set up and maintain a sterile environment in the operating theatre. Ensure all necessary equipment and instruments are available and functioning.

Assistance During Surgery: Provide support to the surgical team during procedures, including passing instruments, handling specimens, and maintaining a sterile field.

Infection Control: Adhere to strict infection control protocols to prevent contamination and ensure patient safety.

Documentation: Maintain accurate records of patient care, surgical procedures, and equipment usage.

Stock Management: Monitor and manage theatre supplies, ensuring adequate stock levels and proper storage.

Communication: Liaise with patients, families, and the surgical team to provide updates and ensure clear communication.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Prior experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in ophthalmology although training can be provided for the right candidate.
  • Knowledge of ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and procedures is desirable.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain a sterile environment.
  • Compassion, empathy, and a patient-centred approach.

Working Conditions:

Full-time position with shifts that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Physically demanding role requiring long periods of standing and the ability to lift and move patients and equipment.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: £25,000.00 per year
