Crime Department BackgroundRanked by Chambers & Partners for its high-quality case preparation, our Crime Department excels in defending clients at every stage of the criminal justice process. A number of our solicitors are police station representatives and can offer free 24/7 representation at all police station interviews as well as at pre-charge investigations. In addition, the department has a number of Higher Courts Advocates providing representation for serious matters such as murder and rape. Our solicitors regularly represent clients at the Youth Court, Magistrates' Court, Crown Court and Court of Appeal.
Our crime department has been involved in many high profile and complex cases and understand the consequential impact of being involved in a criminal process can have working with clients to mitigate the effects. The department's specialism includes appealing sentences/ convictions via judicial review, representation at the Court of Appeal and assisting with applications for Criminal Cases Review Commission injustice reviews in the Court Martial and Service Civilian Court.
The Role:We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Crime Defence Paralegal with Police Station Accreditation to join our esteemed Crime Department. Reporting directly to the Department Director, you will play a vital role in delivering exceptional legal support to clients facing criminal proceedings, including both Legal Aid and private cases.
Main Responsibilities of the Role:- Report directly to Department Director
- Professional pro-active approach, strong client care skills and a sensitive and sympathetic understanding of clients' needs
- Assisting with casework including dealing with a range of Crime matters (LAA Funded and Private client work)
- Attending clients, taking instructions and preparing cases
- Dealing with correspondence
- Preparing and managing funding applications to the Legal Aid Agency
- Preparing draft documents including witness statements and processing evidence
- Attend police stations and courts, offering accredited representation and assistance.
- Collaborate with solicitors during client conferences and court hearings. Maintaining accurate time costing procedures
- Implementing any recommendations made by your supervisor following monthly file reviews ensuring that these are dealt with promptly
- Ensuring compliance with file management.
- Demonstrate passion and experience in a broad range of Criminal Law
- A strong academic background with a Law degree
- Police Station Accreditation is essential.
- Legal experience as an Crime Paralegal/Advisor
- Clear understanding and application of Criminal Laws
- Business acumen and the ability to market the Company
- Excellent communications skills to work effectively with all types of people
- Excellent analytical and organisational skills and ability to use own initiative but know when to seek guidance
- Committed team player, self -motivated and professional
- Excellent IT Skills -familiar with Microsoft Office applications and document management skills
