This is a permanent post and the hours are currently Monday-Friday day shift, although may change to 7 days/combination hours of shifts to cover the unit opening hours of 8am – 8pm.

Please be advised that, effective 1 April 2026, the full-time working hours for all Agenda for Change posts will be reduced to 36 hours.

The Acute Oncology Assessment Unit at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre is a nurse-led unit run by experienced Advanced Nurse Practitioners. The unit provides unscheduled care to patients who present acutely unwell as a result of an oncological emergency or as a side effect of their cancer/cancer treatment. Patients can be admitted from out-patient and day case treatment areas within the hospital, or as unwell admissions from home. The unit also houses the Cancer Treatment Helpline which provides specialist, dedicated oncology advice and support to patients who are receiving systemic anti-cancer treatment at the Beatson Oncology Centre.

The role of the Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) within the Acute Oncology Service is that of a highly experienced clinical nurse responsible for providing direct advanced clinical care to patients with an oncological or haematological malignancy. The post holder will independently utilise a broad range of advanced knowledge, skills and theory in the clinical assessment, diagnosis and initial management of the medical and nursing needs of this specialist group of patients. The ANP will have skills in the early detection and intervention of clinical deterioration in existing or new medical conditions, and will be able to demonstrate high levels of communication skills to liaise effectively with the wider MDT. The post holder will be expected to exercise a high degree of personal professional autonomy and make critical judgements to satisfy the expectations and demands of the role while working within the guidelines of agreed clinical protocols. In addition, the ANP will provide senior leadership within the department and on the Cancer Treatment Helpline.

Applications are sought from experienced nurses who have or are currently undertaking advanced practice roles within an acute care setting (such as acute medicine, surgical, oncology/ haematology) and who have a significant nursing experience. Competence in the provision of acute care to the highest s
tandard is required, as well as evidence of sound clinical decision making and prescribing practice, with knowledge and training equivalent to masters level or the commitment to undertake
the required pathway. The post is intended to provide improved outcomes for patients by improving services and quality. Evidence of senior leadership responsibility and quality improvement projects are essential. Must have or be committed to completing clinical assessment course and NMP training. Depending on interest, this post may also be offered as a trainee ANP opportunity via annex 21.
