Job Purpose

To provide on-site technical support within the Cell Signalling and Cancer Laboratory, carrying out supporting work, providing advice, guidance, and specialist molecular cell biology technical expertise to the research group and the European Cancer Stem Cell (ECSCRI).

Duties and Responsibilities

Key Duties

  • Provide professional advice and guidance to staff and students on technical equipment, facilities processes and procedures, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action, and ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood.
  • Support student learning activities within the research group, including practical work
  • Work independently without direct academic or technical guidance, to help staff and students work safely and effectively. Investigate and analyse specific issues within your area of technical expertise, making recommendations to facilitate the delivery of a high-quality technical service.
  • Ensure safe laboratory practice is adhered to and escalated appropriately when standards are not met.
  • Ensure that the provision of the specialist technical expertise is delivered to the research group, proactively engaging to meet the needs of the research community.
  • Collaborate with others to make recommendations for developments of established processes and procedures ensuring continuity of technical support throughout the research group.
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University's Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required
  • Create specific working groups with colleagues across the University to achieve the research group and and School objectives.
  • Supervise specific project teams on an occasional basis to accomplish key objectives as delegated
  • Develop and deliver training on use of specified technical equipment and health and safety training for staff and students.
  • Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the research group, including responding to technical queries from staff and students and updating laboratory documentation and inventory etc.
  • Co-ordinate allocated resources efficiently, ensuring continual availability of consumables and equipment (e.g. Consumable orders, arranging equipment maintenance/repair, liaising with relevant departments)
  • Produce technical outputs (e.g. Experimental Reports, Health and Safety Documents, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) etc.) that contribute to effective technical delivery.
  • Provide technical support and undertake research work to deliver research outputs under supervision.
  • Maintain an understanding of developments in technical disciplines that are relevant to the subject area.
  • Instruct and guide other employees across the University on delivery of technical expertise.

Qualifications and Education

  1. Degree/NVQ 4 or equivalent Professional membership/experience

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  1. Substantial experience of working within cancer research cell biology
  2. Able to demonstrate specialist knowledge within cancer research cell biology to give advice and guidance to internal and external customers
  3. Ability to set up standard office systems and procedures and make improvements as appropriate

Customer Service, Communication and Team Working

  1. Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people
  2. Evidence of ability to explore customers' needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered

Planning, Analysis and Problem Solving

  1. Evidence of ability to solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identifying and proposing practical solutions and resolving problems with range of potential outcomes
  2. Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key advances within specialist discipline
  3. Evidence of ability to work unsupervised to deadlines, planning and setting priorities for own work and that of others and monitoring progress.

  1. Postgraduate/Professional qualification
  2. Experience of working in a Higher Education environment
  3. Fluency in Welsh, written and oral
