London, Greater London, United Kingdom Carma Full time £45,000 - £55,000 per year

Help Carma to build the future of fashion by leading our volunteer recruitment. As HR Manager, you'll onboard, support, and retain a network of digital volunteers powering a fairer, local, and sustainable fashion industry.
What difference will you make?

Your Impact
As Volunteer Recruitment Lead you'll help shape the team. You will

  • Build a thriving network of passionate, skilled volunteers.
  • Ensure Re Make has the right people to help regenerate communities through fair, secure jobs.
  • Strengthen the shift toward ethical, sustainable, and local fashion production.
  • Open opportunities for people across the UK (and beyond) to take part in re-making fashion.

The Hidden Cost of Cheap Clothes
For decades, textile towns across Britain powered local economies. Generations built livelihoods in mills and garment factories. At their peak, the UK had
thousands of factories
employing tens of thousands of workers.

Then came offshoring. Clothes became cheaper, but the real cost was paid here at home

  • Job loss → Factory numbers collapsed by over 90%, wiping out secure employment in just a few years.
  • Skills wasted → Generations of expertise disappeared. By 2021, fewer than 5% of UK garment workers were under 35.
  • Communities hollowed out → Many areas now face some of the highest in-work poverty rates in the UK, with more than 1 in 4 workers earning below the Real Living Wage.
  • Exploitation returned → Investigations uncovered factories paying as little as £3.50 an hour.

The cheap-clothes boom left
entire towns behind
— replacing stable industry with insecure jobs and unsafe workshops.

This isn't just about global supply chains. It's about what happened in our own backyard — and why we now have a once-in-a-generation chance to put it right.

What are we looking for?

The candidate should either be able to hit the ground running whilst seeking to stretch and grow their skills and experience or have a proven track record of managing people.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of HR policies and procedures
  • Proven experience within HR, operations or similar position
  • Experience in recruiting through various channels
  • Able to communicate effectively with diverse people
  • Excellent organisational and team coordination abilities

What will you be doing?

What We Want The Volunteer To Do
We're looking for a Volunteer HR Manager to help launch Re make — a campaign to create good jobs in fashion, tackle the hidden fashion poverty in the UK, and bring work back to communities that lost them. As HR Manager, you'll recruit, onboard, and support volunteers powering this movement for change.

The Problem
Off-shoring UK fashion was sold as a way to make cheap clothes, but it destroyed secure, fairly paid jobs. Hidden workshops arose where many workers — especially migrant women — faced poverty pay, unsafe conditions, and exploitative piecework. When exposed, many shut down, leaving families and communities trapped in poverty.

The Opportunity
Re make is about more than bringing jobs back — it's about transforming them. Using new technologies and ways of working, the campaign will create fair, safe, and secure jobs. This means helping people earn better, lift themselves out of poverty, and prove fashion can be made locally with dignity and fairness.

Our Approach
Volunteers are central to our work and the achievement of our goals. We seek a passionate Volunteer Recruiter to help recruit, onboard, and manage volunteers for our remote digital network. You'll run recruitment drives, allocate responsibilities, and ensure the best people are retained. Our aim is to always have reliable, motivated volunteers who advance our mission.

Responsibilities

  • Update and manage live jobs boards
  • Oversee the recruitment and onboarding process using our ATS
  • Source and recruit via databases, e-mail, and social media
  • Communicate with volunteers to ensure they are engaged and well-placed
  • Ensure our mission and actions are clearly communicated

Deliverables
A strong volunteer program with a recruitment pipeline leading to a community of skilled, passionate advocates.

Who You'll Work With
You'll collaborate with the Carma Co-Founders and other volunteers contributing to design and development.
