About the role

National Grid Interconnectors is at the heart of UK's transition to our net zero energy future. We operate a number of HVDC Interconnectors that connect the UK's energy system to some of our closest neighbours, allowing energy to be imported to and exported from the UK.

As well as already owning a portfolio of HVDC Interconnectors, we're working on developing new projects to ensure that we are able to meet the UK's future demands for greener energy solutions.

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Asset Engineer at our VikingLink site in Lincolnshire.

As the Senior Asset Engineer you will be responsible for working with the Asset and Engineering site teams towards the effective management and maintenance of all our assets. This role involves implementing asset health models in line with company policies, planning and overseeing maintenance activities, conducting risk assessments for incomplete maintenance tasks, and directing the assessment of asset defects on-site.

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams based on-site and offsite to enhance asset performance and reliability while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and compliance with regulatory standards. You will be responsible for ensuring that the resilience of our assets and operations is continually enhanced as we seek to deliver excellent availability and reliability for our customers and the UK Energy System.

The role is hybrid with an expectation of two to three days minimum on site at Vikinglink Lincolnshire with more on site presence as and when required.

Please note, you must be able to drive with a full UK driving licence for this role.

What you'll do
  • Carrying out asset health assessments and processes in alignment with National Grid policies and standards.
  • Interpret central asset management policy from and implement to assigned interconnector. Asset and equipment guidance – interpret OEM manuals into work instructions and embed within Asset management system (e.g Maximo task lists)
  • Ability to support with site application of policy – change management in respect to policy to technician/engineering application.
  • Produce asset class strategies specific to site and execute the delivery of these working with site operations teams.
  • Develop maintenance plans (Maximo work orders) to ensure timely and effective completion of maintenance activities including planned outages. This includes presenting a scope of maintenance tasks for asset data for Asset Health and Lifecyle activities (i.e. production of maintenance documents/tasks to monitor asset failure modes).
  • Support with defining scope of work on all maintenance outages in accordance with maintenance policies and defects.
  • Coordination with OEMs on warranty issues to support with asset integrity.
  • Work with other interconnector engineering and asset management professionals to share best practice.
  • Lead or contribute to investigations on asset failures and ensure learning is embedded within site processes/systems and shared with wider stakeholders
  • Ability to read and review OEM drawings and support with fault diagnosis to determine remedies and root causes.
  • Monitor and report on asset performance, ensuring that all engineering and asset management activities are documented and comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement within the team, promoting best practices in asset management and engineering.
  • As the site engineering team are the asset data owner for Maximo, support with ensuring accuracy and improvement for assigned interconnector
  • Lead a site asset health review for onsite assets.
  • Act and lead as technical expertise on asset faults, maintenance enhancements and defects.
  • Perform maintenance assurance during and post outage, present report and findings to Asset and Engineering Manager and Head of Operations and Maintenance.
  • Management of Asset Risk; conduct risk assessments for maintenance activities conducted by inhouse engineers that cannot be completed as scheduled, ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards. This could include deferred maintenance to support commerciality and increase availability.
What you'll need
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in engineering and asset management, preferably within the energy sector.
  • Strong knowledge of high voltage electrical systems and asset management principles.
  • Proven leadership skills with experience managing multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g. Chartered Engineer status) are advantageous
  • Proficient in asset management software and tools.
  • Strong understanding of risk management processes and methodologies.
  • Ability to interpret technical documentation and engineering drawings.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and industry standards related to asset management and engineering
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, creating tangible content and analysis
  • IEng/CEng Engineer status
  • Institute of Asset Management (IAM) diploma
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a STEM field.
  • Previous leadership experience/leadership qualifications (e.g. certificate in management studies/foundations of leadership)
  • HNC in electrical/mechanical engineering or Equivalent

A competitive salary between - £58,751- £68,447 per annum dependent on capability.
