Why Join Us?

Walsall is proud to be a 'Families First for Children' Pathfinder, leading the way nationally in innovative approaches to family support. As a Pathfinder, we are at the forefront of designing and delivering services that champion the needs of children and their families, setting a benchmark for best practice across the country.

Our commitment is particularly evident in our targeted investment in supporting new and expectant parents, as well as those with pre-school age children.

About the Role

We are seeking to recruit a Family Help Support Worker (Fathers Worker) who understands the unique experiences and challenges of fatherhood. The ideal candidate will be able to provide a positive role model and act as a mentor to fathers, supporting them to be actively involved in their children's lives. Lived experience of fatherhood, or a deep understanding of the issues faced by fathers, will be highly valued.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality, outcome-focused support to fathers, children, and families in line with statutory guidance and organisational priorities, with a particular emphasis on strengthening the role of fathers and nurturing positive, sustained relationships between fathers and their children.
  • Undertake person-centred assessments of family needs, strengths, and risks, using approved tools and frameworks, ensuring a dedicated focus on understanding the unique contributions and challenges faced by fathers within the family dynamic.
  • Develop, implement, and review tailored support plans in partnership with fathers and families, prioritising activities and interventions that promote meaningful father-child interactions and support the ongoing involvement of fathers in their children's lives.
  • Provide direct practical and emotional support through structured sessions, group work, and community-based interventions, specifically designed to empower fathers, enhance their parenting skills, and build their confidence in their roles.
  • Facilitate access to universal, targeted, and specialist services, advocating for fathers and families to remove barriers, and actively promoting opportunities for fathers to participate in services and community life.
  • Work in partnership with professionals and agencies to safeguard children and young people, ensuring their voices are heard and recognising the vital role fathers play in creating safe, stable, and nurturing environments.
  • Champion diversity, equality, and inclusion in all aspects of service delivery and community engagement, valuing the varied experiences and perspectives of fathers from all backgrounds.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience working with children, families, and individuals with a wide range of needs, including during times of distress and conflict, with a proven ability to engage and support fathers in developing strong, positive relationships with their children.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with children, families, colleagues, and partners, and to encourage open, constructive dialogue between fathers and their children.
  • Skilled in empathy, active listening, and building positive, professional relationships, enabling fathers to feel valued and supported in their parenting journey.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage your own workload efficiently, whilst maintaining a focus on enhancing father-child relationships.
  • Commitment to safeguarding, data protection, and confidentiality, with a clear understanding of the impact positive father involvement has on children's safety and wellbeing.

Special Conditions:

You may be required to work evenings and weekends. The role is subject to a DBS check and requires the ability to travel efficiently across the borough. Basic digital skills are essential.
