15 hours over 3 days; Monday, Wednesday & Friday

Hourly Rate

Starting @ £13 per hour

Working with

GPs, practice nurses, practice manager and all other members of the practice team

Responsible to

All GP partners equally, practice nursing team and practice manager

Responsible for

Carrying out the key tasks and activities outlined below and working with the practice team as a whole for the ultimate benefit of patients.

Background

Craigvinean Surgery is a rural general practice of about 4200 patients. It is actively involved in the provision of medical services within the primary health setting. All members of the primary healthcare team work closely together utilising the expert skills of individual members, thus providing the best possible care for its practice population.

Main purpose of the job

The primary function of the post-holder will be, as a member of the practice nursing team, to assist the nursing and medical staff in the course of their day to day work thus optimising their availability for clinical duties. Such assistance will include administrative as well as clinical tasks, as detailed below.

Guidelines for practice

1.

The post-holder not to work beyond his/her level of competence

2.

Supervision and guidance to be directed mainly from the practice nurses, who will ensure that appropriate levels of supervision and support are in place

3.

External training to be undertaken if required to enable identified tasks to be carried out effectively

4.

A knowledge of the practice's infection control policy to be developed, including of the policy on needle stick injury and preventative / remedial measures

5.

Annual CPR training updates are mandatory

6.

A knowledge of the location of emergency equipment is required

Key tasks and activities

Clinical

1.

Perform delegated venepuncture, maintaining concise and accurate documentation of care, utilising IT as appropriate

2.

Tasks/information collection for chronic disease management - bloods, BPs, lifestyle discussion etc

3.

Assist with and/or perform tasks relating to patient care as directed by practice nurses, to include:

• minor dressings
• assisting with minor surgery, coils etc

4.

Test routine urine specimens, maintaining concise and accurate documentation of care, utilising IT as appropriate

5.

Perform ECGs & Dopplers

6.

Carry out chaperone duties, as requested by clinicians

7.

Implement standards for infection control and safeguard health and safety of self and others within the performance of clinical duties

8.

Delivery of B12 injections

Administrative

1.

Maintain and order stock, always adhering to the system for ordering, receipt, storage, quality checks and disposal of clinical supplies and for monitoring stock levels; keep relevant documentation

2.

Re-stock doctors' and nurses' consulting rooms

3.

Maintain and clean equipment used by clinicians in accordance with the practice's infection control policy

4.

Review and keep up-to-date the nursing admin. procedures section of the practice manual

5.

Attend practice nursing team / practice / practice development / CHP meetings as required

6.

24 HR BP machine distribution and admin

7.

R Test machine deployment eg Fitting and Appointment co-ordinating

General

1.

Develop an awareness, in both clinical and administrative tasks, of the importance of maintaining a tidy, clean and safe working environment

2.

Liaise with both clinical and administrative practice team members as appropriate

The role of Health Care Support Assistant will evolve alongside practice developments.
