About us

UCL is London's Global University and ranked 9th in the world (QS World University Rankings The Institutional Strategy is underpinned by six key enablers, all of which require good data management and reporting (operational and strategic).

Student Operations is responsible for the student record - its management and quality - as well as the principal functions supporting the student lifecycle (e.g. exams, timetabling, curriculum information). The division is also responsible for student statutory reporting to external stakeholders (e.g. HESA, OfS, GMC). There is a close working relationship between Student Operations and SRS Education Services, as well as with the Office of the Vice-Provost (Education & Student Experience).

About the role

This post is part of the Student Data Quality team within the Student Operations directorate.

As Education and Student Data Librarian, you will need to work closely with colleagues in Student and Registry Services (SRS) and across faculties and other Professional Services, especially in the Information Services Division (ISD), to respond to requests and identify issues. You will be part of a team of colleagues devoted to improving student and education data quality for all use cases. You will work closely with the data analysts who will assist in collating, analysing, and reporting on data to propose solutions for effective decision making. You will work with the Head of Student Data Quality to develop the team into a coherent function and will bring specialist skills to the role in the areas of:

  • Data lifecycle management (DLM) - You can deliver the assurance of a team service because you have a depth and breadth of knowledge and experience relating to all aspects of data lifecycle management. You will have experience of delivering data governance as part of data lifecycle management processes and you will have knowledge of effective monitoring practices to improve standards. You will have experience of compiling and curating data governance artefacts such as business glossaries and data catalogues.

  • Data profiling and modelling - You will have experience of handling complex data sets and profiling data to describe trends and produce forecasts to complex questions. You can compile options or models based on data analysis to identify independence and conditionality in variables. You will have knowledge of using machine learning and/or other predictive modelling systems or technologies. You can demonstrate logical and creative thinking to identify the root causes of data-related issues and recommend options for remediation.

The objective of this new role is to provide much needed data lifecycle management skills and stakeholder support for SRS to deliver excellent quality operational reporting and data analysis on a range of education and student data issues (e.g. student enrolment forecasting, space utilisation, timetabling and curriculum operations). In addition, this role will increase the maturity of the team by providing core aspects of data librarianship such as data and metadata management plans (creation, storage, access, preservation).
