Principal Civil Design Engineer – Water £80k / £400 contract
An established engineering design consultancy delivering civil and multidisciplinary engineering across the UK utilities and water sector. We have a respected and growing civil engineering design team in Manchester with a strong pipeline of clean water, wastewater and infrastructure projects. This role provides the opportunity to take technical ownership of major water-sector design packages and lead the development of high-quality civil engineering solutions across complex projects.
Initial Project Description
You will support and lead a range of civil engineering design projects across the UK water industry, including designs of UMON 3 and 4 upgrades at sewage treatment works, clean water main replacement schemes, CSO upgrades and pumped storm storage solutions. Work will span feasibility, outline and detailed design stages, offering broad technical exposure across both infra and non-infra assets.
Role Overview
To take responsibility for design solutions, technical standards and deliverables across civil engineering design packages. You will oversee the work of engineers and CAD technicians, approve key design outputs, and ensure deliverables meet safety, quality, integration and programme expectations.
Key Responsibilities
• Ensure the design team produce deliverables that satisfy safety and quality requirements
• Approve DRAs, design deliverables, reports and specifications
• Identify efficient design solutions from scopes and site visits and communicate these clearly
• Direct and develop engineers, CAD technicians and graduates
• Guide design in compliance with relevant technical, professional and water company standards
• Ensure project change for design packages is fully implemented and recorded
• Oversee work undertaken within formal processes and procedures
• Estimate hours required for design packages and support programme planning
• Attend and present designs at ALM, KM and similar meetings
• Review, interpret and brief standards, procedures and updates
• Act as Professional Head for the discipline or CRE/Responsible Engineer where required
• Provide technical guidance for projects and tenders and support continuous improvement
Required Qualifications & Experience
• 10 years' relevant civil design experience in the regulated water industry at senior or principal level
• Experience delivering hydraulic calculations and hydraulic profiles
• Graduate or HND in a relevant discipline
• Good IT proficiency
• Chartered Engineer
• Experience across clean water, wastewater, infra and non-infra designs
• Experience in outline and detailed design
• Awareness of construction methods and materials
• Knowledge of engineering drawing practices
• Full driving licence and access to a vehicle
