Overall job purpose:
The Product Design Engineer will work closely with the research and development team to feed into new design concepts and technology. Once at a feasibility stage they will be responsible for developing these concepts to production ready designs.

They will conduct early-stage testing to shape and validate designs. Support the Test team through product verification, analyzing data and interpreting results to aid design improvements.

Support the transfer of projects from Development to production, working with the production team from capturing early stage DFA requirements, DFA reviews to support production trials.

*Core Responsibilities*
Concept development; creating product concepts and layouts around developing technology

Applying brand language to new concepts to fit product families

Product/Mechanical design primarily using Solidworks (3D Solid & Surface modeling).

Creating 2D technical drawings, including tolerancing.

Ensuring that designs are suitable for mass production.

Utilizing 3D printing for concept development, usability trials, and functional testing.

Testing and validating prototype and pre-production parts.

Analyzing data and interpreting results to aid design improvements.

Generating project documentation, including drawings, test reports, DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), DFM (Design for Manufacturability), DFA (Design for Assembly), etc.

Providing production and part approval support as required.

Designing and developing products
Feeding into research projects from early stages, developing design concepts and developing and validating them to a production ready stage, collaborating with other Mechanical and Electronics team members, Test Team, and Process engineers in Production Team.*

Continuous Improvement activities
Including Engineering Change Notices Engineering Change notices allow for modifications to be made to existing designs based on feedback and evolving requirements.
DFMEA
(Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) is a risk assessment tool used to identify and mitigate potential design failures and their impact on product performance. The Principal Design Engineer conducts DFMEA analyses to proactively address risks and ensure robust design solutions.
These tasks are not intended as an exhaustive list of the post holder's duties. The post holder is expected to carry out any reasonable request as deemed appropriate by their Line Manager to support business needs. Specific responsibilities and authorities are defined in procedures relevant to the role.
Experience/knowledge:
Essential

  • 3-year industrial experience in a consumer, medical or similar product design environment
  • Expert in using 3D CAD - ideally Solidworks
  • Good knowledge of production methods including plastic injection moulding and metal stamping
  • Design verification / validation experience
  • Developing products to production readiness

Project ownership and organization

Desirable

Broad Knowledge of manufacturing methods

Simulation Skills - FEA

Qualifications and training:
Essential

  • Degree or similar in Product Design, mechanical engineering or similar
  • Acheivement - 2:1 or higher.
