Rate: £14.00

Role Purpose

To provide high-quality, person-centred support for a child or young person with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in a 1:1 setting within the community. The role focuses on enabling the individual to access activities, develop independence, build social skills, and participate fully in community life while ensuring safety, wellbeing, and progress towards agreed outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

· Provide consistent 1:1 support for a child or young person with SEN in community settings (e.g., leisure activities, appointments, outings, education-linked activities).

· Support the development of communication, independence, and social interaction skills through structured and unstructured activities.

· Assist with personal care needs, where required, in a respectful and dignified manner.

· Implement strategies and support plans designed by teachers, therapists, or SEN professionals.

· Monitor and record progress, behaviours, and achievements, reporting regularly to the SEN Coordinator and family/carers.

· Encourage participation in activities that promote confidence, resilience, and life skills.

· Safeguard the wellbeing of the individual by adhering to safeguarding, health and safety, and confidentiality policies at all times.

· Work collaboratively with families, educational providers, therapists, and other professionals to ensure consistency of care and support.

· Use initiative to adapt activities and approaches in response to the individual's needs, interests, and mood.

Person Specification

Essential:

· Understanding of common SEN conditions (e.g., autism, ADHD, learning difficulties, speech & language needs).

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport.

· Patience, empathy, and resilience when managing challenging behaviours.

· Ability to work independently, using initiative while following support plans.

· Flexibility to support the individual in varied community settings.

· A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

Desirable:

· Training in behaviour management, communication strategies (e.g., PECS, Makaton), or sensory support.

· First aid and/or safeguarding training.

· Experience supporting families in a community or educational environment.

· Knowledge of EHCPs (Education, Health & Care Plans) and multi-agency working.

Additional Information

· The role may involve evening or weekend work, depending on the needs of the individual and family.

· A valid driver's licence and access to a vehicle may be required.

· Enhanced DBS check is essential.
