Bee Farm Manager
The Opportunity: Are you passionate about sustainable farming practices and helping wildlife by enhancing the environment? This is a unique and exciting opportunity for someone looking to diversify from their livestock farm job to become a Bee Farm Area Manager.
You will join a highly successful supplier of quality honey to UK major retailers and will manage and oversee the annual lifecycle of beehives spread across a territory. The hives are strategically placed on farms where the bees help farmers by pollinating crops such as clover, oilseed rape, beans, borage, and fruit, which increases the yield and quality. The bees also pollinate wildflowers and trees, helping to sustain the environment.
You'll enjoy being hands-on and outdoors, travelling around local farms to manage the hives. Full training and support will be provided, so previous beekeeping experience is not an essential requirement.
The Company: The employer is a highly successful supplier of quality honey to UK major retailers, focusing on quality, flavour, and tradition. They also supply honey and beeswax to industrial users, particularly in the cosmetics industry.
Role Responsibilities:
- The management of the bees in your care, following the life-cycle SOPs (standard operating procedures) provided by the head office
- Regular visits to farms, to inspect, care for, collect data and harvest honey from the beehives
- Build and maintain relationships with farmers who have beehives on their properties
- Perform maintenance on beehives, equipment, hive area access and fencing
- Manage and maintain the storage facility and the stored equipment
- Work closely with your line manager to learn new techniques and provide detailed feedback on hive performance
- Support the improvement of SOPs and continuously strive to improve operating standards and adhere to agreed protocols
- Support other teams in various other areas from time to time, e.g. at harvest time or with migratory beekeeping operations
- Supervise any staff assigned to you
- Undertake additional and or other responsibilities to meet business requirements
Skills you will need:Essential:
- Operational experience in livestock, fruit, or arable production
- Hands-on and practical skills
- Excellent attention to detail in record keeping and the ability to analyse the data collected
- The proactive forethought involves thinking ahead about potential production issues related to local climate, pollen levels, and weather patterns
- An ability to work autonomously and solve problems as they occur
- Farmer-friendly with excellent communication skills
- Flexible and able to work longer hours during busy times of the year, with time off in lieu during the winter months
- Ability to lift heavy equipment safely & regularly across often rough terrain
