Key Duties

  • To deliver a preventive psychological intervention (an adapted version of Coping with Stress called Skills for Adolescent Wellbeing) to young people participating in the randomised controlled trial.
  • To act as a specialist in the delivery of this preventive psychological intervention.

  • Provide professional advice and guidance on delivering a manualized preventive psychological therapy for adolescent depression. This will include providing advice and guidance on processes and procedures to internal and external customers that will have institute wide impacts, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action where appropriate, and ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood.
  • Take responsibility for resolving issues independently within the preventive trial where they fall within set role objectives.
  • Investigate and analyse specific issues within the field of delivering supportive/psychological therapies for young people, creating recommendation reports, supported by advances within preventive psychological interventions for young people..
  • Ensure that the provision of delivering supportive/psychological interventions is delivered to the institution, proactively changing the delivery according to customer requirements
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University's Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required
  • Plan and deliver specific small scale projects, co-ordinating and supervising project teams created as needed
  • Develop and deliver training within delivering preventive psychological interventions
  • Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the Wolfson Centre for Young People's Mental Health and the department
  • Instruct and guide other employees across the Centre within delivering preventive psychological interventions

Specific Duties

  • To undertake training in the adapted version of Coping with Stress preventive intervention for depression in vulnerable young people
  • To deliver the manualized intervention to small groups of young people in an online format
  • To use communication skills to engage effectively with the participating young people
  • To answer any queries the young people may have about taking part
  • To monitor any emerging concerning behaviours (e.g. suicidal thoughts) in young people participating in the group and to follow standard operating procedures of how to deal with this safely including escalating to the senior clinical team and reporting adverse events to the Clinical Trials Unit
  • To liaise effectively with the wider research and clinical team to deliver a high-quality study
  • To agree to sessions being audio-taped and observed for training and research quality purposes and to participate in research interviews or focus groups about your experience of delivering the intervention
  • To be flexible in working hours in order to deliver the intervention to young people at times that suit them (e.g. after school/college, or weekends)

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

  • Degree in relevant area (e.g. psychology) or equivalent Professional membership/experience

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Substantial experience of working with young people and delivering supportive or psychological interventions
  • Able to demonstrate professional knowledge within delivering supportive or psychological interventions to give advice and guidance to internal and external customers
  • Proven experience in developing new processes and procedures

Customer Service, Communication and Team Working

  • Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people
  • Evidence of ability to explore customers' needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered
  • Proven ability to develop networks in order to contribute to long term developments

Planning, Analysis and Problem solving

  • Evidence of ability to solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose both practical and innovative solutions
  • Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key advances within specialist discipline
  • Evidence of ability to undertake and deliver specific projects and supervise short term project teams

Desirable Criteria

  • Masters level qualification in a relevant field
  • Experience of working with young people, particularly in small group settings
  • Training in or experience of delivering cognitive behavioural therapy
  • An interest in manualized interventions and a willingness to work within the manual
  • An interest in research in mental health and prevention
  • Experience of working within the NHS
  • Fluency in Welsh, written and oral
