Research Fellow in Cosmology

The University of Portsmouth is a global employer of choice where exceptional people create, share and apply knowledge that makes a difference.

Experience the pride of being part of a select group – one of only four universities in the south-east of England to achieve a prestigious Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework. Additionally, we proudly rank among the top 140 universities globally in the Times Higher Young University World Rankings.

Ambition, Responsibility and Openness drive our every endeavour. Join our esteemed institution with a proven track record of success, and where dedication to excellence is key. We want people to make their mark in a professional community that truly values people, innovation, and achievement.

The Role:

The successful candidate will work with Prof. Kazuya Koyama and Prof. David Bacon on the STFC funded project "Assessing non-linear models beyond LCDM for stage-IV dark energy surveys". The goal of the project is to provide methodologies and tools to exploit the information available on nonlinear scales to test general relativity on cosmological scales. These methodologies will be applied to the data from Euclid and DESI.

The preferred start date is 01 April 2026, but candidates wishing to start any time before October 2026 should still apply.

The ICG consists of 17 academic staff, 17 postdoctoral researchers and around 30 PhD students, and has an active international visitor programme. Portsmouth has major involvement in the Dark Energy Survey (DES), the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), the Vera Rubin Observatory, ESA's Euclid satellite mission, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO), the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), the Gravitational Wave Optical Transient Observer (GOTO), and other international collaborations. The University of Portsmouth is a member of the South-East Physics Network (SEPnet) and hosts the 3704-core SCIAMA supercomputer.

Applications (application form, CV, publication list and research proposal for the fellowship) should be submitted by the closing date. Applicants should also arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent by email to icg-, to arrive by the same date.

Whilst there is a need to be in Portsmouth a few days a week, hybrid working is available for this role.

This appointment is a fixed-term contract for 29 months. If you have any queries regarding this position, please contact Kazuya Koyama at
