Job Purpose

To ensure that all company operations within the Recycling and Aggregate supply comply with relevant UK environmental legislation, permits, and industry standards. The Compliance Officer supports the business in maintaining legal compliance, implementing best practice, and promoting a strong culture of environmental responsibility and health & safety.

Key Responsibilities

Regulatory Compliance

  • Monitor and ensure compliance with environmental legislation (e.g. Environmental Protection Act 1990, Waste Framework Directive, Duty of Care regulations, Environmental Permitting Regulations, etc.).
  • Maintain and review Environmental Permits, Waste Carrier Licences, and Exemptions to ensure validity and compliance.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies such as the Environment Agency (EA), SEPA, and local authorities.
  • Conduct internal audits and inspections across sites and operations to identify compliance gaps and corrective actions.
  • Manage and maintain compliance documentation, including Duty of Care paperwork, Waste Transfer Notes (WTNs), and Consignment Notes.

Environmental & Health and Safety Management

  • Support ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems and audits.
  • Investigate environmental incidents, near misses, and non-conformances, ensuring root cause analysis and corrective action plans.
  • Assist in maintaining risk assessments, COSHH records, and Safe Systems of Work related to waste handling and transport.

Training Communication

  • Deliver compliance and environmental information to the relevant managers for operational staff training.
  • Promote awareness of environmental and regulatory responsibilities at all levels of the organisation.
  • Keep staff updated on regulatory changes and industry best practices.

Reporting & Documentation

  • Prepare reports and compliance summaries for management and external regulators.
  • Track and monitor key compliance KPIs and trends.
  • Support tender submissions and client audits by providing compliance documentation and evidence.

Essential Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of UK waste management legislation and Environmental Permitting Regulations.
  • Experience within the waste, recycling, or environmental services sector.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
  • Good communication and report-writing skills.
  • Competent IT skills (MS Office, data management systems).

Desirable:

  • WAMITAB (COTC) qualification or working towards it.
  • ISO 14001 / ISO 45001 internal auditor training.
  • NEBOSH or IOSH qualification.
  • Experience liaising with the Environment Agency or similar regulators.
