Full Time / 32.5 Hours Per Week / Fixed Term For 1 Year

We are currently looking for an experienced Social Emotional Mental Health teacher to join our passionate team at Leicester City Council. As part of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Support Service, the Social Emotional Mental Health Team is peripatetic, who support and promote the education of pupils with social, emotional, behavioural, and mental health needs in Leicester city primary schools.

Based at New parks house you'll be part of the team of social emotional mental health specialist teachers and additional Support staff on a 32.5 hours per week on a fixed term basis of 12 months due to funding. In addition, you'll be able to travel across the city to different settings whilst also having the flexibility to work remotely at other council settings or at home.

What you'll be doing

As the designated Social Emotional Mental Health Team link teacher for several Leicester city schools, you will manage your diary and caseload to work with children and young people, school staff, and families to provide guidance relating to social emotional mental health needs, including assessment, providing recommendations, monitoring and evaluating progress, and supporting with some direct teaching or mentoring for key adults in schools. You will write reports for a varied audience and contribute to the Education Health and Care Plan process, as well as being part of review meetings, including pastoral support meetings, core group meetings and team around the child / family meetings. You will also support in the development and provision of training in schools around social emotional mental health specific areas.

Following the Special Educational Needs code of practice, you'll work with school support teams to advise on the preparation and implementation of individual education plans and reviews of pupils' progress. Providing direction and supervision for Social Emotional Mental Health Team practitioners working with individual children.

You'll work directly with pupils to develop social skills, self-confidence, resilience, emotional understanding etc which can be with individuals, group or whole classes. Knowing the pupils, you'll work with the school and parents to ensure their social, emotional and mental health needs are supported, and a graduated response is in place. You'll have close links with the Pupil referral Unit and Designated Specialist Provisions.

In addition, you'll support smooth transitions for the pupils on your case load. Giving advice on Special Educational Needs and Disability processes, social emotional mental health and behaviour management as well as supporting a close link between school and home.

As a qualified teacher you'll hold Qualified Teacher Status and have significant experience in special educational needs including experience with pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs and the associated behavioural challenges. Being a successful teacher in mainstream or special educational needs schools you'll have the ability to work across all primary phases and secondary. Having an informed understanding of the key issues for Special Educational Needs and Disability and social emotional mental health and behaviour management on a local and national level as well as knowledge of legislation and good practice.

You will possess exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, having the ability to quickly develop positive relationships, within the team, as well as with other professionals, including staff within schools.

You will hold person centred working at the core of your ethos and employ knowledge and skills in this area to advocate for, and be a champion of, children and young people experiencing social emotional mental health challenges. You will be resilient, flexible and compassionate, committed to supporting inclusive practices.

Appointment to this role will be based on an Enhanced Children's Disclosure Barring Service and Driving Licence check.
