PCSP provides a wide range of planning and management information support and is the first point of contact for schools developing their strategic and operational plans. Additionally, it is home for the Health, Safety and Compliance Team and provides a base for project managers working on Faculty initiatives.

The Health, Safety and Compliance Team

The Faculty of Science and Engineering is committed to pursuing the highest standards of Health and Safety in all of its activities. The safety team works across the Faculty in collaboration with academic and technical colleagues to ensure all staff, students, visitors and other building users remain safe at all times. The inclusion of emergency, incident and wider resilience management within this team is a University-leading initiative.

The Role

The Faculty Emergency Officer plays a vital role in maintaining and improving fire and emergency arrangements across the Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD), including the Nancy Rothwell Building, Engineering Building B, James Chadwick Building, Oddfellows Hall, and the York Street Building.

The post holder will manage emergency response plans, fire prevention and evacuation procedures, and support wider incident management. They will also review and enhance emergency practices across all Faculty buildings to ensure compliance with legislation and University policies.

This role requires a proactive individual with strong operational capabilities and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders. The successful candidate will be instrumental in promoting a culture of safety and best practice across the Faculty.

The Person

You will have the expertise and confidence to manage emergency and incident response measures in MECD and support the development of effective emergency arrangements across the Faculty.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate they have:
  • A relevant fire, emergency, incident management or risk qualification
  • Specialist knowledge of fire safety and emergency response regulations
  • Detailed knowledge of fire detection and alarm systems and their operation
  • The ability to remain calm and precise under pressure
  • Excellent communication skills to explain complex information clearly
  • Strong interpersonal skills to influence and build relationships across all levels
  • Significant experience managing emergencies in large, complex buildings
  • Experience drafting emergency plans, procedures, and reports
  • Experience auditing and developing emergency and business continuity plans
  • Experience training staff and running emergency response exercises
Ideally, you will also have experience with multi-agency response arrangements and JESIP, and experience working in a higher education or science and engineering environment.
