Merchandise Manager
This is a full-time, temporary role (expected to last approximately 12 months) to cover family leave. The role is based either in Cornwall or the South West of the UK with monthly travel to our Head Offices in Cornwall.
Seasalt began in 1981 with a small shop in Penzance, selling workwear to local mariners and practical overalls to artists. Today, we've grown into a thriving omnichannel retailer with over 80 UK and Ireland stores, 400+ wholesale stockists, and a growing international and online footprint.
As a B Corp and winner of both Drapers "Best Place to Work" and CIPD's "Best Recognition Programme", we care deeply about our people, our communities and our long-term impact. Our Head Office teams provide the foundations that empower our people to drive sustainable growth across the UK and international markets.
As a Merchandise Manager, you'll maximise sales and gross profit through the delivery of a balanced, commercial and profitable range in line with the brand vision. You'll contribute and drive departmental and category business strategy and development by managing product training requirements, maintaining the appropriate levels of stock and maximising product margin. You'll collaborate with Buying and Design to ensure analysis and information is in place to guide current and future range content, and adhere to the critical path.
You'll help us by:
- Working with the Director of Merchandising and Senior Central Merchandise Manager to ensure seasonal and departmental budgets and forecasts are planned by channel, category and attributes and analysed in context of historical sales and remaining season trade.
- Holding regular reviews to ensure the merchandising team maintains a departmental/category level range plan that reflects planned buy levels, aligns with agreed budgets/forecasts, and meets expected attribute mixes.
- Understanding the levers driving BIM targets and reporting regularly on the progress of each team in delivering those targets.
- Reviewing partner performance and aligning buy plans accordingly, ensuring key differences from the core range and future partner or wholesale opportunities are reflected in seasonal buy plans.
- Working closely with Buying and Design to ensure lessons-learned reviews, SMS, pre-bulk and bulk sign-offs are held at the appropriate time across all trading channels.
- Overseeing range development, ensuring product reflects the Seasalt strategy, is without gaps or duplication, and the season is logically and commercially thought through.
- Regularly seeking out market context and highlighting opportunities.
- Leading weekly meetings with the Merchandising and Buying teams to review trade, ensuring bestsellers are quickly potentialised and risks and opportunities are highlighted to the Director of Merchandising.
- Working with the Senior Channel Merchandising Manager to ensure stock is in the most appropriate channel to maximise sales and profit, minimising risk across all channels.
- Maintaining an accurate ISP (Integrated Sales Planner) to reflect trading opportunities and challenges throughout the year and ensuring this is reflected in future seasonal range builds.
- Proposing markdowns in line with budgets, forecasts, and last year's context, ensuring margin is maximised while achieving target sell-through.
- Setting up and maintaining department/category WSSI's to ensure optimal stock levels that maximise sales while preventing overstock.
- Leading quarterly forecast review meetings to capture and scale opportunities and risks, ensuring timely delivery of all forecasts and integration into future season plans.
- Providing positive and energised leadership to the Merchandising team that supports company policy and strategy to build a strong team that can react and trade at pace, with a focus on succession planning.
The skills you'll be sharing with the team:
- Proven track record as an experienced senior level Merchandiser with proven merchandising experience.
- Experience running and trading own department.
- Experience managing a team, leading peer group and influencing beyond their own department.
- Experience deputising for management.
- Experience of motivating individuals or a team to achieve results.
- Great Microsoft Office skills.
- Highly analytical and commercially aware with a strong understanding of competitors.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to influence senior management.
- Problem solving capability - overcoming issues, proposing solutions and making commercial decisions.
- Ability to perform under pressure and operate in a fast past environment and to deadlines.
- Strong planning and strategy development skills.
