Home Office Digital, builds and develops services for the rest of the department and for government. Every year our systems support up to 3 million visa applications, checks on 100 million border crossings, up to 8 million passport applications and deliver 140 million police checks on people, vehicles and property.

Migration and Borders Technology Portfolio (MBTP) is part of the Home Office Digital Directorate in the Home Office.

MBTP is a Portfolio of around 3,500 dedicated professionals made up of civil servants and suppliers working together to develop some of the most challenging and transformative technology products, supporting critical programmes within the Migration and Borders system.

Working closely with colleagues in the Migration and Borders mission, we also support a number of the Home Office's capabilities such as Customer Services, Immigration Enforcement and Border Force. We jointly design services, build, run and sustain them to enable some of the government's most important strategic outcomes, notably the legitimate movement of people and goods to support economic prosperity.

The role of the Senior Project Support Officer will support the G7 Planning Manager through the operation of project management processes. You will enable the smooth running of the portfolio by analysing, tracking, escalating and providing challenge where needed.

Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join the MBTP PMO Planning Team and provide critical support across the portfolio, specifically with our Programme Increment (PI) planning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure systems are in place to enable effective planning.
  • Support and lead a team consisting of one HEO.
  • Manage dependencies across projects.
  • Oversee project controls to maintain governance and compliance.
  • Develop and deliver project performance reports.
  • Ensure organisational tasks are carried out efficiently.
  • Manage and engage with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Understand and apply the risk management process.
  • Own and lead regular PI (Program Increment) Sessions involving all key portfolio teams.

The above responsibilities are not exhaustive, and you may be required to undertake any of the above tasks or additional tasks not listed above, within the remit of their grade, to support the team.

Working Pattern:

This role is available on a full-time basis with the option of job-share and compressed hours available. This role is also suitable for part-time working hours, with a minimum requirement to work [4 days / 30hours] per week due to business requirements.

Essential criteria

    • Demonstrated ability to work in PMO or programme environments, ensuring inclusive processes and equitable participation.
    • Skilled in planning and managing dependencies with fair prioritisation and consideration for diverse stakeholder needs
    • Experience leading governance boards in complex environments, promoting transparent and inclusive decision-making.
    • Ability to critically evaluate information from multiple sources, reconcile differences, and recommend improvements that benefit all stakeholders.
    • Proven ability to manage diverse public sector stakeholders, tailoring communication for different audiences and fostering collaboration and respect.
  • Strong organisational skills, commitment to sharing lessons learned, and ability to deliver effectively under pressure while maintaining fair and consistent standards.
    • Project Management Qualifications: One of the following or willingness to undertake One of the following:
    • Prince 2
    • APM
    • APM Project and Controls
