Lecturer in Computational Engineering
We are a vibrant, diverse Department that looks to lead innovation in education and research at one of the world's leading universities. To support our ambition, King's has invested in new multi-million-pound teaching and research laboratories of more than 3000 sqm for the Department at heart of its Strand campus, which opened in August 2022.
We celebrate diversity and actively promote an inclusive environment and encourage applicants from underrepresented groups. In moving our ambitions forward, we are continuing to appoint academics to join us in shaping the future of education and research for King's Engineering. We offer undergraduate and postgraduate education, with a distinctive approach, combining traditional teaching methods with modern, project-based learning, catering for the needs of our students and the industries in which they will work.
It is essential that applicants have the enthusiasm and commitment needed to lead world-leading researching programmes, while also ensuring the success of these educational programmes.
About the role
We are seeking an enthusiastic individual with the appropriate disciplinary experience for the post of Lecturer in Computational Engineering, who are interested in developing an independent world-leading research group with an aim to complementing existing strengths in the department. Areas of activity at the moment include, but are not limited to: a) computational methods for next-generation energy and transport systems, including aerodynamics, propulsion, and nuclear fusion; b) multi-scale and multi-physics simulation, with applications in fluid dynamics, structural mechanics, or coupled aero-thermo-mechanical systems; c) development of advanced algorithms, numerical schemes, and high-performance software for simulation of complex physical systems, including fluid, thermal, heat transfer or structural dynamics. In addition to leading their research group, the post-holder will also play a key role in the continuing development and delivery of modules in computational engineering for undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes offered by the Department of Engineering.
Our Department of Engineering is home to academics whose backgrounds span the entire range of engineering disciplines. As part of this diverse group, there is a very successful group of academics in computational engineering, whose expertise spans the areas of fluid dynamics, fusion, aerodynamics, aerospace propulsion, wind energy, heat transfer, combustion and fire science. In doing so, the academics develop novel computational methods to tackle these challenging processes (e.g. Nektar+) and where appropriate use existing codes to unlock a state-of-the-art understanding of these complex systems. Also, within the department we have a range of experimental groups doing complementary research in a range of areas including experimental fluid dynamics.
This position is being established to continue to grow the area of computational engineering within the Department and the research of the post holder's group should be complementary to that which is currently established within the department.
Responsibilities include:
- Establishing a world-leading research group within computational engineering.
- Developing and delivering high-calibre modules within the area of computational engineering (including computational fluid dynamics) for both undergraduate and postgraduate Engineering students
- Actively pursuing external research funding from both governmental funding bodies and industrial partners
- Leading undergraduate and postgraduate student projects within the Department of Engineering
- Supervising PhD students and post-doctoral researchers who are part of your research group
- Contributing to the administrative duties within the department and/or faculty.
- Contributing in a positive manner to the culture within the Department of Engineering
- Demonstrating a proven commitment to equality and diversity.
Research staff at King's are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro-rata) for professional development. This entitlement, from the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers , applies to Postdocs, Research Assistants, Research and Teaching Technicians, Teaching Fellows and AEP equivalent up to and including grade 7. Visit the Centre for Research Staff Development for more information.
