Purpose of Role
To lead our Packaging Technology team and shape our sustainable packaging strategy across the entire Spirits portfolio.
Responsible for driving packaging innovation and embedding sustainability principles and best practices, that align with both commercial and brand goals. You will take a leading role in helping us shape and deliver our ESG strategy, balancing quality, cost and compliance, against consumer expectations to create sustainable, cost effective packaging solutions.
Main Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the Packaging Technology and Sustainability team, fostering a collaborative, innovative, and data-driven culture.
- Define and manage a packaging sustainability strategy aligned with global ESG targets and regulatory requirements.
- Represent packaging and sustainability at external forums, such as SWA working groups, and internally, ensuring alignment between procurement, operations, NPD, marketing and finance.
- Own the development and technical validation of new packaging materials that enhance quality, shelf life, and brand impact while meeting sustainability targets.
- Collaborate with Quality, NPD, and Procurement teams through the stage-gate process, to deliver packaging innovation from concept to launch, ensuring relevant sustainability and technical decision criteria are considered at each stage
- Oversee technical trials, supplier audits, and packaging performance testing.
- Lead the reduction of packaging waste and carbon footprint through measurable KPIs
- Work with Procurement to embed sustainability principles in to the sourcing strategy, ensuring compliance with ESG standards.
- Responsibility for the development and management of the Value Engineering roadmap
- Maintain packaging specifications and compliance documentation to support ESG reporting in line with UK and EU regulations
- Responsible for EPR and Valpak reporting, collaborating with Procurement, Finance and Technology to ensure correct data standards are maintained
Personal Profile
- 7+ years' experience in packaging development, technology, or sustainability within FMCG, food & beverage, or manufacturing.
- Proven track record in leading packaging sustainability programs or circular economy initiatives.
- Strong technical knowledge of packaging materials (glass, PET, aluminum, paperboard, closures, etc.) and relevant regulatory standards.
- Experience collaborating cross-functionally with NPD, operations, and procurement.
- Excellent project management, data analysis, and stakeholder communication skills.
- Passionate about sustainable packaging and environmental impact.
- Commercially aware, balancing sustainability with brand and business value.
- Curious, hands-on, and comfortable leading change across complex supply chains.
Preferred Qualifications/Experience
- Degree in Packaging Technology, Materials Science, Sustainability, or related field.
- Membership or certification with IOM3 or CIPS (advantageous).
- Experience with LCA tools, sustainability reporting platforms, and ERP/MRP systems.
