Independent Domestic Violence Advocate (IDVA)
Job Purpose
We are looking for passionate and delegated individuals to join DV services and help them make a difference.
You will be joining a team of committed and inspiring individuals whose dedication has saved the lives of thousands of women, and children.
You will be working with survivors/victims who have experienced domestic violence, by securing their safety, where applicable that of their children and by providing crisis support .
Job Description
- To undertake risk assessments and individual support and safety planning and manage domestic violence cases .
- To provide flexible crisis support service to survivors experiencing, or who have experienced domestic abuse, whilst demonstrating respect, sensitivity and empathy to concerned families.
- To act as an advocate on behalf of victims where appropriate, including writing letters, reports ,assisting with completing relevant forms and any other required relevant support.
- To act promptly when children and vulnerable adult safeguarding needs arise
- To maintain confidentiality with client records, in strict compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998, the Crime & Disorder Act 1998, the Human Rights Act, Articles 2& 3 and the Children Act 2004.
- To develop effective working relationships with, agencies to which victims may have referred themselves or have been referred to for further.
- Attend and contribute to DV MARAC and multi-agency meetings as appropriate
- To identify and challenge practices wherever and whenever they occur, which may increase risks to families.
- To carry out additional appropriate work related to domestic violence service delegated by the line manager .
Personal Specification
Extensive experience in DV or VAWG, including experience of carrying out risk and needs assessment, casework and safety planning
- Knowledge of the particular needs of women from diverse communities and the barriers to accessing support faced by women from BAMER communities
- Knowledge of the range of statutory and voluntary agencies with which women and children may come into contact when experiencing domestic abuse.
- Knowledge of Safeguarding practice and procedures
- Knowledge of Criminal Justice System in relation to domestic violence and other legal options available to women and girls experiencing domestic abuse
- Knowledge of legal, welfare & housing rights of women and girls experiencing domestic abuse
- Knowledge of Data Protection Act & Crime & Disorder Act relating to domestic abuse victims
- Experience of working with those affected by domestic violence both young girls and women
- Experience of building and maintaining partnerships with other agencies
- An understanding of the impact of trauma on women experiencing abuse
- A thorough knowledge of safeguarding practice, procedures and legislation
- Ability to provide solution focused advocacy and support
- Excellent organisational, ICT, written and verbal communication skills
- Maintain accurate case notes and up to date records
About You
Ideal candidates will have experience of working intensively with survivors and be adept at risk and needs assessment and support planning.
You will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the intersection between domestic abuse and multiple disadvantage, a developed understanding of how this can make it difficult for women to engage with support, and an ability to reflect on your own practice.
This service is run by women for women and is therefore restricted to women applicants under the Equality Act 2010, Schedule 9, and Part 1. Section 7(2) e of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 apply. The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.
An enhanced DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) disclosure will be required for this role.
