Make an Impact at RSM UK
Our National Innovation & Capital Tax Reliefs Team works with a range of companies, from start-ups to multinationals, to assist them in the preparation of claims for Research & Development tax relief. As an Innovation Reliefs Associate Director in our Edinburgh or Glasgow office, you will work with companies across all sectors, most notably manufacturing, engineering, life sciences, software and digital technologies to assist them to identify and prepare successful tax relief claims. The variety of projects and impressive client list will challenge you every day, helping you expand your capabilities and grow professionally.
This is an exciting opportunity to work in an actively growing, specialist Innovation Reliefs tax team at RSM.
You'll make an impact by:
- Developing claim methodologies and managing the preparation of R&D tax relief claims for submission to HMRC.
- Leading meetings with clients to advise on R&D tax relief and assisting with identification of qualifying R&D activities and expenditure.
- Analysing and compiling high quality qualifying R&D expenditure calculations.
- Demonstrating your expertise in writing technical descriptions of the client's projects to include in the reports.
- Identifying, leading on, and progressing business development opportunities, pitching for work with both new and existing clients.
- Managing and developing junior members of the team.
- Ensuring that the R&D engagement team are fully updated on progress and any issues that might affect the client relationship.
- Working collaboratively with other members of the IR team in the region and nationally.
What we are looking for:
Are you someone who thrives on variety, loves learning new things, and enjoys connecting with people? If you can spot inefficiencies in everyday life and are passionate about making improvements, this role is perfect for you
We value diverse experiences and perspectives. Here's what we're looking for in our ideal candidate:
- Proven track record and in depth knowledge of Innovation Reliefs.
- Experience in preparing and submitting R&D tax relief claims across sectors, and knowledge of different claim methodologies, especially any industry specific challenges, over a broad range of industries.
- Strong level of tax technical knowledge of the UK's R&D tax incentives.
- Experience in drafting project technical descriptions with a clear and concise writing style and with reference to the DSIT guidelines on R&D for tax purposes.
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Experience in responding to HMRC enquiries.
What we can offer you:
We recognise that our people are our most important assets. That's why we offer a flexible reward and benefits package that will help you have fulfilling experience, both in and out of work.
- Hybrid and flexible working.
- 26 days holiday (with the option of purchasing additional days).
- Lifestyle, health, and wellbeing including financial wellbeing benefits such as financial tools, electric car scheme and access to a virtual GP.
- Access to a suite of 300+ courses on demand developed by our inhouse talent development team.

At RSM, we want to create a strong sense of belonging so that people of all identities, backgrounds, and cultures feel they can bring their true self to work. Our clients come from all walks of life. We aim to achieve that same diversity of background, experience and perspective in our own teams, so that we can genuinely understand our client's needs. Diverse teams bring a broader range of ideas and insights to work. That's why we're working together to ensure our firm's principles and processes support a firm culture that embraces difference and strengthens inclusion.
