Skills and Competencies

  • Experience working with high-performance clusters in a Linux environment and using version control software such as Git
  • Strong programming skills in scientific and analytical languages (e.g., Python, R)
  • Familiarity with and interest in state-of-the-art machine learning methods
  • Proven ability to handle large datasets
  • Familiarity with model performance evaluation and model inter-comparison methods
  • Experience with either numerical models for ocean/wave modeling or statistical modeling approaches
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to communicate insights effectively
  • Basic understanding of artificial intelligence concepts, with curiosity and enthusiasm for learning how AI tools can be used to improve processes and drive efficiency
  • Interest exploring AI systems and a willingness to develop awareness of responsible AI practices, including risk management and ethical use

Education

  • Currently studying towards an MSc or PhD in Coastal Ocean Modeling, Machine Learning, or related fields (including students transitioning between MSc and PhD programs)
  • Available for a 4-month internship starting in February 2026

Responsibilities
Moody's coastal flood risk model development team is seeking an intern to work with us to explore development of Machine Learning and other types of surrogate models for processes relevant to coastal and offshore risk – e.g., surge, waves, and inundation overland. The aim of this internship is to enhance our existing ML models and evaluate other complementary approaches to reduce the computational cost associated with traditional numerical modeling while retaining a high level of accuracy. You will be working with the coastal flood risk team, which focuses on modeling coastal and offshore perils such as storm surge, waves (offshore, nearshore, and overland), wave setup, and overland inundation.

  • Characterizing the dynamics of interest and identifying the most relevant predictors and physics to capture
  • Exploring methods for improving the representation of variability and extremes within the framework of our existing ML models
  • Comparing models with other surrogate frameworks as an alternative to ML approaches

About the Team
The Moody's Model Development team is responsible for creating mathematical models and providing information on the financial impact of natural hazards. We are a multidisciplinary group of scientists and engineers who use a combination of numerical, statistical, and data-driven approaches to model damages caused by tropical storms, extra-tropical storms, thunderstorms, coastal and freshwater floods, and tsunamis.
