Main duties of the job

The post is for a Trust Junior Fellow for Major Trauma (MT). The main purpose of the role is to provide medical support to the major trauma patients on the Major Trauma Unit (MTU), working alongside the Major Trauma sub speciality consultants, the Major Trauma Senior Fellows, the Major Trauma Advanced Clinical Practitioners (MTACP's) and the Major Trauma Unit nursing and therapy staff.

You will also be expected to review and assess patients with Major Trauma outside of the MTU, advising Trust staff on appropriate treatment and where necessary advise of need to be transferred to the MTU if meeting the admission criteria.

These posts are ideally suited for candidates wishing to progress to higher surgical training in a Major Trauma Sub speciality and are not recognised for CT Training. The job has been structured to provide a fantastic opportunity to expand trauma experience in a Major Trauma centre. Research and audit will be supported and encouraged. The Major Trauma Unit is housed within the T&O care group and the rota will be arranged by T&O.

Duties Will Include
Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Day to day clinical management of Major Trauma patients including ward rounds
  • Support organisation of smooth repatriations to local trauma units and further afield MTC's completing all paperwork.
  • To clerk new admissions and working alongside the on call senior/Registrar advise on and see emergency cases being referred to the department from number of areas. Carrying out primary, secondary and tertiary surveys, assessment and ongoing management of polytrauma patients.
  • When on duty provide ward doctor cover on the MTU being the 1st point of contact for the MTU staff for emergency and routine jobs and for escalation of concerns for Major Trauma patients.
  • Major Trauma ward rounds alongside the duty consultant for the week, the MT Senior fellow and the MTACP seeing new admissions.
  • Routine ward rounds alongside the team Consultant/senior reviewing previous admissions, or seeing new admissions with the duty consultant for the week.
  • Self-Development /Clinical Training days provide the opportunity for extra educational activities including portfolio work, Theatre, Clinic or audits.
  • Participation in multidisciplinary team meetings as required.
  • Liaison with all health professionals involved in a patient's care as appropriate.
  • Good communication with patients and carers.
  • Administrative tasks related to patient care and departmental management.
  • To participate fully in the Clinical Governance activity of the service.

Additional Information
Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists). Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave.

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)

Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5;

  • Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training
  • Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)
  • A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)

Essential criteria

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • NHS experience
  • Completion of FY1 / FY2 rotation or equivalent
  • Current ALS

Desirable criteria

  • FRCA / MRCP / MRCS / MCEM or equivalent
  • ATLS qualification

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria
