What's it like to work at the British Council as a Teacher?

Teacher's Success Story

Role Description/Purpose

The British Council Spain operates a network of teaching centres across the country, delivering English teaching to around 30,000 students each year. In addition to teaching students directly, we manage the British Council's only school in Madrid, oversee a sizeable exams operation, provide support for English language learning nationwide, and run strong programmes in arts, education, and society.

Our teaching centres welcome a diverse range of learners, with the majority being young learners in early years, primary, or secondary education, alongside a significant number of adult students. We take pride in the quality of the teaching we deliver, and this is made possible by recruiting the best teachers available. Our teachers are highly professional and benefit from robust academic systems and continuous professional development opportunities.

The purpose of this role is to promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English, while supporting the wider aims of the British Council and its mission of cultural relations.

Role Accountabilities

The British Council Spain is seeking dedicated English teachers to support our global English strategy. This role involves delivering teaching to the highest standards of English Language Teaching, enhancing the British Council's reputation as a world authority in the field, and engaging in continuous professional development while sharing best practices with colleagues.

As part of our teaching team, you will ensure that lessons meet learner needs and expectations, align with Teaching Quality standards, and reflect organisational goals. You will also play an important role in maintaining strong relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and the wider community, while contributing to the activities of the teaching centre and the British Council's broader plans.

Your main duties will include planning, preparing, and delivering high-quality English language teaching tailored to the needs of diverse customer groups and individual learning styles. You will monitor and assess student progress, providing regular feedback both in writing and face to face, and actively promote learner autonomy through homework and individual meetings with parents and students. You will contribute to the development and improvement of the Teaching Centre by working collaboratively as part of the teaching team, and you will complete teaching-related administrative tasks such as class registers and records to the required standards.

In addition, you will engage in continuous professional development to maintain high standards in teaching and learning, ensuring the British Council remains at the forefront of best practices in English Language Teaching. You will help build lasting, mutually beneficial relationships by enhancing students' understanding of contemporary UK culture, and you will provide support through tutorials and guidance to learners and parents in choosing the most suitable courses and learning paths.

Safeguarding, equality, diversity, inclusion, and health and safety are central to this role. You will ensure that all young learners are safe, secure, and cared for while in our teaching centres, and uphold the British Council's policies and standards in these areas.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a world-leading organisation and make a meaningful impact on learners' lives while advancing your own professional growth.
