Locum Appointment for Service (LAS) in Hospital at Home

£ per week (ST1/ST2 level)

To commence 01/11/2025 to 04/08/2026

0.8 Whole time Equivalent (80%) 4 week days 9am - 5pm

Why work for us?

Patients are at the centre of everything we do in our daily working lives at NHS Borders ensuring they are safe, cared for efficiently, effectively by suitably experienced and qualified staff driving quality at the heart of patient care.

Our service caters for a stable population in a tranquil and beautiful rural area only 36 miles from Scotland's vibrant capital, Edinburgh. There is affordable housing in the local area and assistance with temporary accommodation is available for the successful candidate(s).

The Role

You would gain experience looking after patients under the care of the Hospital at Home service, providing hospital-level care in patient's own homes or Care Homes. You would be working within a supportive team of consultants and nurse practitioners. We currently provide this service to patients living within the central Borders, Teviot and Cheviot localities with a plan to expand throughout the whole Borders area.

If you wish there may be the opportunity to contribute to the general medical out of hours rota at the BGH, only by mutual agreement and if not impacting daytime working within Hospital at Home.

This post is aimed at post foundation doctors at ST1 or ST2 level who have completed a foundation medical training programme (or have gained equivalent additional clinical experience). Full GMC registration and licence to practice is essential but no previous Hospital at Home experience is required.

A Drivers License and access to a car is essential for this role. Travel expenses incurred while seeing patients will be reimbursed.

This post is not a recognised training grade but may be a great opportunity to develop and evidence clinical and professional competence to assist overall career development, particularly for those interested in careers in medicine, medicine of the elderly or General Practice.

Arrangements can be made for an informal discussion and informal visits are also welcome; please contact Cathy Wilson, General Manager, or Dr Mathew Topping, consultant physician, on the following email addresses:

Due to legislative changes from 1 April 2025, this post may require a different level of criminal records check done than is currently the case. If the post is assessed as a "regulated role", your appointment will be subject to joining the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. If there is any change to what is currently required, this will be confirmed by either the Hiring Manager or the Recruitment Team. For more details on these changes please visit: Disclosure Scotland Changes.

To work in the United Kingdom, there is a legal requirement for an individual to demonstrate that they have the relevant permission to work in the country. This permission is, without exception, granted by the UK Visa and Immigrations Service.

As part of the pre-employment checks for a preferred candidate, NHS Scotland Boards will check your entitlement to work in the UK. It can be evidenced through a number of routes including specific types of visa as well as EU settled and pre-settled status. To find out more about these routes of permission, please refer to the GOV.UK website here.

For specific types of post, if you do not have the necessary eligibility to work in the UK, it might be possible (though not guaranteed) to secure sponsorship via a UK Skilled Worker/Health & Care Worker Visa. However, this is only possible if the employer is a licenced Sponsor, and if the post does not fall below the current minimum salary threshold or 'going rate'. Further information on these criteria can be found here.

It is ESSENTIAL that you have checked that you either already have an appropriate right to work in the UK or that the post would be eligible to be sponsored BEFORE submitting your application form

**PLEASE NOTE: We cannot accept late applications so please ensure your application is submitted early**

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.
