We are looking for a Freelance Community Engagement Worker to start around 17th November, working approximately 21–28 hours per week (ideally Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, plus one other day).

Our client has commissioned a research programme to gather the views of residents from all parts of the Kirklees area. The programme will use surveys and outreach to ensure a wide range of perspectives are included, particularly from communities who are often underrepresented.

To help achieve as many responses as possible, we are seeking freelance support to be out in the Kirklees community encouraging survey participation. The role involves organising and delivering engagement activity through local groups, events, colleges and community hubs, as well as visiting high-footfall areas to speak directly with residents about the survey and its purpose.

Role purpose

The fieldworker will act as a facilitator, ensuring the survey is understood, accessible, and completed by as many people as possible. They will also report back to BSA on visits, engagements, surveys supported or distributed and share any feedback or barriers identified that could help improve participation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand the survey and the rationale behind it. Be able to clearly explain the benefits of completing the survey.
  • Help residents understand the importance of their input and how it will influence council planning and community wellbeing.
  • Encourage and support Kirklees residents aged 16 and over to complete the survey.
  • Promote participation respectfully, the goal is to maximise response numbers while maintaining professionalism and sensitivity.

In addition the role may need to

  • Overcome literacy and language barriers and support residents with finding a format of the survey they can use
  • Assisting with accessibility. Helping residents with physical disabilities (e.g., visual impairment, difficulty writing) to complete the survey or find a format that suits them.

Administration and Reporting

  • Keep accurate records of engagement activities.
  • Provide daily updates and community feedback.
  • Flag risks, issues, or safeguarding concerns promptly.

Skills and Experience

  • Experience in on the ground community engagement, customer service or call-handling roles.
  • Strong communication skills: clear, empathetic and approachable.
  • Ability to follow scripts and guidelines while responding flexibly to callers' needs.
  • Organised and methodical approach to admin and coordination tasks.
  • Confident handling sensitive or personal information, with full understanding of GDPR.
  • Reliable IT skills, including use of spreadsheets, email and phone systems.
  • Local knowledge would be of benefit

Contract Details

Freelance role: part-time, flexible hours aligned with project needs.

Location: Kirklees area or willing to drive to the area. All travel expenses will be covered on top.
