What will I be doing?

As well as providing advice on policy and guidance for planning authorities and developers.

The range of opportunities is both challenging and rewarding. Somerset provides the opportunity to get involved in some of the UK's most high-profile growth initiatives including, new garden communities, housing infrastructure fund, enterprise zones, and national infrastructure projects such as Hinkley Point C.

Your day-to-day work will involve:

  • Providing advice to senior managers on highway development management matters.
  • Developing and providing professional guidance to other members of the team.
  • Representing the Highway Authority at planning committees as well as providing evidence at planning appeals and public inquiries.
  • Contributing to development and delivery of the Groups service improvement plan.
  • Engaging and building relationships with a range of parties including planning authorities, developers, agents and legal advisors.

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be. But it will really help if you:

  • Are educated to degree level or equivalent through relevant professional development.
  • Have experience of working within the planning system preferably with highways development management experience.
  • Possess the ability to work to deadlines and manage multiple case concurrently.
  • Can prepare observations and communicate them clearly and unambiguously in writing and verbally to a range of audiences.
  • Possess the ability to assess the implications of proposals and work with people to develop appropriate solutions.

We're proud to be here for the people of Somerset. And that means everyone in Somerset. An important part of this is ensuring that we are as diverse and inclusive as the people and communities we serve.

We welcome applications from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences to enrich our team. You can always contact the hiring manager for a chat if there's anything you want to talk about before you apply.
