About us

Applications are invited for two 4-month Research Fellow positions in the Vertebrate Palaeontology group in the Department of Earth Sciences, UCL. Funded by The Royal Society, the project will focus on the reconstruction of the endocranial anatomy of extinct gavialoid crocodylians, the incorporation of this information into phylogenetic analysis and systematic revision, and evaluation of evolutionary rates, with this used to address questions about the group's evolutionary history.

About the role

This positions are available to start from the 1st December 2025. The successful candidates will join the PI's research group at UCL, currently comprising three research fellows and 10 PhD students, working on a diverse array of projects pertaining to crocodylomorphs, dinosaurs, birds, systematics, spatiotemporal biodiversity patterns, ecomorphology, and conservation palaeobiology.

The main purpose of the job is:

  • To develop a virtual dataset of internal cranial anatomy of crocodylians.
  • To describe and quantify endocranial anatomy and incorporate this into phylogenetic analysis, taxonomic revision of fossil species, and evaluation of evolutionary rates.
  • To write manuscripts and present results at conferences.
About you

The successful candidates will have a Ph.D. (or thesis submitted subject to examination) in palaeontology, biology, anatomy, or a related field, or have the equivalent relevant experience, and a first degree in earth sciences, biology, anatomy, natural sciences, or a related subject.

Knowledge of crocodylomorph internal cranial anatomy, and experience of phylogenetic analysis, including dataset assembly is essential, as is experience of evolutionary rates analysis.
