Are you looking for a role in a high profile, fast-paced policy area of Government?

An exciting opportunity to join the Animal Health and Welfare Division of the Agriculture and Rural Economy Directorate has arisen which will afford you the opportunity to play a key part in developing strategic policy that supports the development of the wider rural economy in Scotland, as well as working with a range of Scottish Government colleagues, industry stakeholders and other partners.

You will have a technical policy role in the Disease Control Branch, overseeing the drafting, maintaining and exercising of contingency plans to test Scottish Government's, and its operational partners', and the preparedness for responding to notifiable animal diseases, such as foot and mouth disease, avian influenza and African swine fever. 

This is a key role within the team, especially when there are disease outbreaks in the UK to manage and will require you to engage with, and work collaboratively with, a variety of industry stakeholders to ensure policy decisions are evidence based and proportionate.

  • Draft, amend and develop contingency planning material to promote animal disease prevention and disease control management activities.
  • Develop, manage and participate in contingency planning exercises relating to notifiable animal disease control
  • Provide regular and unplanned updates to Ministers, senior officials, colleagues and partner organisations.
  • Assist in the development of disease control and contingency planning legislation, policy and guidance, including ensuring SG colleagues and other operational partner's capability to respond to disease outbreaks.
  • Play an active role in the application, through declaration by Ministers and Chief Veterinary Officer, of Disease Control measures in the case of suspect and confirmed cases of notifiable animal diseases.

Experience:  

Previous experience of working in a policy environment, including:

  • drafting ministerial submissions and PQs.
  • briefing Ministers.
  • stakeholder engagement and communications.
  • working with partner officials and agencies, including other UK administrations.
  • responding to MiCase enquiries.
  • understanding, amending and developing policy and relevant legislation.
Behaviours:
