Ensure Safety and Sustainability in Naval Engineering

At Babcock, we're working to create a safe and secure world, together. If you join us, you can play your part as a Senior Safety & Environmental Engineer at one of our Babcock sites.

The role

As a Senior Safety & Environmental Engineer, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You'll provide professional safety and environmental engineering support to naval ship projects, influencing designs that meet stringent safety and environmental standards. From hazard identification to technical documentation, your work will help deliver world-class vessels that protect national security and meet sustainability goals — all while advancing your own career in a dynamic, innovative environment.

Day-to-day, you'll have the following responsibilities:

  • Work as part of a team to provide safety and environmental engineering support across design, build, launch, and trials.
  • Provide input on non-conformances and design changes to influence safety outcomes.
  • Develop and maintain hazard logs and attend hazard identification and review meetings.
  • Author technical documentation such as Ship System Safety & Environmental Case Reports.
  • Support colleagues in developing safety and environmental assessments or cases.

This role is full time and is a hybrid role with 2 days onsite and 3 days working from home.

Essential experience of the Senior Safety & Environmental Engineer:

  • Engineering background with experience in safety and environmental assessment/management processes.
  • Experience using Claims/Arguments/Evidence techniques for safety and environmental arguments.
  • Awareness or experience of techniques such as SWIFT, HazOpS, and FME(C)A.

Qualifications for the Senior Safety & Environmental Engineer:

  • Ideally degree-qualified in an engineering discipline (extensive relevant experience considered).
  • Preferably hold Defence Maritime Regulator's SEMT or SSMO certification (training can be arranged).
  • Membership of a relevant institution (e.g., IExpE, IMechE, RINA, IET, SARS) and Chartered or Incorporated status (or working towards).

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.

Many of the positions within our company are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions. This means that your eligibility for certain roles may be affected by your place of birth, nationality, current or former citizenship, and any residency you hold or have held.
