As Instrument Specialist II, you will be responsible for ensuring the consistent availability and readiness of surgical instrumentation. This role manages the coordination of surgical equipment distribution, oversees instrument repairs and procurement, and handles vendor loaner set logistics. Serving as a key liaison between Sterile Processing leadership and OR service line managers, this position ensures the appropriate instrumentation is available to meet surgical demands. Additionally, the Instrument Specialist II leads strategic initiatives and supports leadership with special projects aimed at improving operational efficiency and patient care.
A caregiver in this position works days from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. OR 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. with the ability to float to CCF west region locations which include: Avon Hospital, Lutheran Hospital, Lorain ASC, Strongsville ASC, Twinsburg ASC, Medina, and Wooster.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Receive, process, and place instrument and equipment orders on behalf of OR Nurse Managers, SPD Leadership and other clinical stakeholders to facilitate timely and accurate ordering of instrumentation.
- Participates in the tray standardization process.
- Communicates to the OR Service Line Managers when instruments are missing and determines the appropriate solution.
- Monitors tray assembly process and make recommendations for improvement.
- Ensures employee compliance to 'missing instrument procedure' during tray assembly. Ensures that missing instruments are sterilized and relocated to appropriate instrument tray.
- Monitors instrument stock levels in pack room and assembly areas and makes recommendations for purchase when levels are low.
- Provides input into operational and capital budget preparation and coordinates capital equipment repairs and service contracts with leadership. Makes recommendations for equipment purchases.
- Pays and reconciles invoices.
- Receives, process, and fulfills instrumentation requests from instrument depot.
- Allocates instruments for repair, receives repaired instruments and distributes to appropriate area.
- Coordinates the preventive maintenance and repair programs for instruments used in the OR and house areas.
- Coordinates the loaning and acquisition of equipment for Operating Room areas of responsibility.
- Manage sterilization parameters for all owned, loaned and consign instrumentation for MIFU. Provide MIFUs to caregivers and managers.
- Attends and/or assists with departmental staff, management and committee meetings.
- Assisting department leadership with large or complex projects.
- Can be assigned to lead small to medium size projects.
- Assists with special projects as required.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician (CRCST), or Certification Sterile Processing and Distribution Licensure in Sterile Processing (CSPDT)
- Five years of related experience to include any of the following areas: Sterile Processing, Operating Room, Inpatient and/or Outpatient Hospital Equipment, and Surgical Technology
- Proficient in ERP Systems (ex. Oracle) or similar software applications
- Proficient with computer software applications (Excel, Word) and related sterile processing information systems
- Knowledge of performance improvement and quality standards specific to sterile processing
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Associate's Degree
- Experience with ordering, receiving, distributing and warehousing of all essential surgical, inpatient care equipment and supplies
- Certification Quality Improvement Associate (CQIA) from American Society for Quality (ASQ) completion within two years

Physical Requirements:
- Requires manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to perform the basic functions of the job.
- Ability to work under pressure and within time frames and must be detailed oriented.
- Ability to perform duties while standing, sitting, stooping and reaching for long periods of times; ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a continual basis: ability to push, pull, navigate carts weighing up to 200 pounds and manual dexterity sufficient to perform basic function of the job.
- Complexity of Work: Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follow Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
