The multidisciplinary Design and Quality Monitoring team are part of Mace's Consultancy Technical Services. Our team includes architects, building surveyors, engineers, urban designers, master planners, NEC supervisors and interior designers. We deliver projects nationally for both public and private sectors including government departments, local authorities and private developers.

The role
This is a Senior Manager grade role for a chartered professional who will support the delivery of multiple projects within the Consultancy Technical Services multidisciplinary team. We have an enormous pipeline of work across the Education sector.
This is a new role supporting the Department of Education (DfE) which forms part of the Technical Advisory Service 2025 (TAS25). The role is a Construction Quality Management (CQM) lead and will provide assurance around construction works focussing on the quality of build throughout the construction delivery stage.
Tasks include but not limited to:
Review the Principal Contractors Stage 4 design packs including DRRs, Method Statements, design and construction programmes, construction management plans
Review on comment on the contractors Inspection and Testing Plans
Agree review procedures with the main contractor
Prepare and submit site attendance plans
Coordinate and manage site inspections, compiling site inspection reports
Liaison with our internal TA teams and specialist sub-consultants
Witness commissioning
Undertake, manage, coordinate and close out snagging through the use of computer aided tracking systems
Manage close out of defects and conduct seasonal commissioning
You will be supported by discipline specialists from the Technical Advisor's team relevantly qualified and experienced for the project and work stages on site (e.g. geotechnical engineer, civil engineer, structural engineer, façade engineer, fire engineer, architect, landscape architect). You will possess soft skills that allow them to make clear representations to the DfE, influence the Principal Contractor to secure improvements and seek support from the discipline specialists.
You will work closely with Technical Advisory team, Project Managers, Building Surveying, Cost Managers, Responsible Business and H&S teams, leading the CQM role and coordinating with our multi-disciplinary teams. This role will be based in our London / Birmingham / Bristol / Leeds / Manchester/Plymouth office with site and client visits. We currently work flexibly and allow working at home for 1-2 days a week, but note that policies around working from home may change in future. However, also note that this role will require at least 2-3days a week on site per project, which may increase to 3-4 days at peak times.
A successful candidate will be confident, competent and experienced in the technical delivery of projects. They must have clear understanding of construction technology & best practice including off site and modular construction, Building Regulations and buildability. They will be responsible for structuring their own workload and ensure that the information is delivered on time, within the budget constraints and to the agreed quality standards.
The candidate must have positive technical, communication and organisation skills, structuring and monitoring their own workload and deliverables and maintain a positive relationship with the team and Mace clients. They will report to the project lead and Construction Quality Monitor Lead.
Candidates must have a strong track record of working closely with contractors, be comfortable challenging compliance and behaviours including tracking and driving quality issues to a successful conclusion.
Qualification:
Be a chartered member of a relevant institution for their specialist discipline (e.g. ICE, IStructE, ARB, CIBSE, IMechE etc.). There is no requirement for the CQM Lead to be a member of the Institute of Clerk of Works Inspectorate and Construction Inspectorate (ICWCI), however they must be a chartered member of a relevant institution to the construction industry).
Skills and Experience:
Have a minimum of 5 years' experience inspecting public sector or equivalent buildings including all forms of construction, conservation and listed buildings.
Be able to demonstrate Multi-Disciplinary design coordination experience and equivalent site monitoring and recording experience to act as the client's eyes and ears on site.
Where off site construction methods (modern methods of construction) are being used, the CQM Lead shall have relevant experience of inspection at both factory facilities and on site and be able to recognise shortfalls during inspections both in the factory and on site
Must be able to undertake their role in accordance with the latest edition Clerk of Works and Site Inspector Handbook including; site diary and reports, trade elements checklists, health and safety checklists
Be familiar with the UK BIM Framework and its implementation.
Be familiar with the Building Safety Act, CDM regulations and other Health and Safety legislation to be able to recognise CDM non-compliance during the works and CDM foreseeable design hazards with unreasonable risk levels
Familiar with HSG168 Fire Safety in Construction
Be conversant with DfE Soft Landings and its implementation.
Successful candidates will have:
- A relevant construction degree or equivalent qualification.
- Chartered Building Surveyor (Essential).
- NEC Supervisor or NEC Project Manager Accreditation (not essential).
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work autonomously.
Be a both a team leader and a team player.
Knowledge of UK building regulations, and statutory planning regulations.
Comfortable accessing and reading construction, construction, design material including programmes, specifications and AutoCAD drawings.
