Reports To: Chairman & Board of DirectorsMake sure to read the full description below, and please apply immediately if you are confident you meet all the requirements.Position/Hours: Permanent, 40 hours per week, although flexible approach is required which may include occasional weekend workingLocation: Mayflower Marina, Richmond Walk, Plymouth, PL1 4LSSalary: From £65,000, subject to prior experience Benefits 33 days’ holiday (including public holidays), 6% company pension employer contribution, Life assurance 2 x annual salary, Private medical scheme (including dental & optical)The Managing Director is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic direction, and operational management of Mayflower Marina thus ensuring the marina operates efficiently, safely, and profitably while delivering exceptional service to berth holders and visitors.Residential and visiting customers, all employees, Chair and Board of Directors, all external stakeholders.Strategic LeadershipDevelop and implement the company’s strategic plan in alignment with Board directivesIdentify growth opportunities, including marina development, and adoption of innovationMonitor industry trends and adapt business strategies accordinglyTo develop and manage capital improvement projectTo enhance the marina’s reputation and long‑term sustainabilityTo strive to maintain Mayflower Marina’s 5 Gold Anchor status and Clean Marina accreditationOperational ManagementOversee day-to-day marina operationsTo regularly meet with staff members to communicate on operational and safety mattersTo implement policies, procedures and undertake periodic reviews to ensure compliance with statutory health & safety and environmental regulationsTo oversee staff training to meet statutory and operational requirementsTo adopt and implement marina industry best practiceTo manage and maintain marina assets, plant & equipment, and infrastructureTo oversee the preparation and management of monthly P&L accounts, annual budgets, forecasts, and financial reports.Monitor financial performance and implement cost control measuresDrive revenue growth through berth occupancy, hoist and boatyard services, fuel sales, and ancillary servicesRecruit, train, and manage marina staff, fostering a culture of excellence and accountabilityTo oversee staff training to meet statutory and operational requirementsPromote staff development and succession planningSet performance objectives and conduct evaluationsTo make annual staff salary review recommendations and implement subject to Board approvalCustomer & Stakeholder RelationsTo strive to maintain ‘the Mayflower family’ atmosphere that exists between marina staff and berth holdersMaintain strong relationships with Plymouth City Council, the King’s Harbour Master, The Duchy of Cornwall, the Marine Management Organisation, Princess Yachts, suppliers, and community groupsTo garner customer feedback and resolve any complaints promptly and professionallyRepresent the marina at industry events, conferences, and public forumsMarketing & Business DevelopmentOversee marketing strategies to attract new customers and enhance brand visibilityDevelop and promote events, seasonal campaigns, and loyalty programsLeverage digital platforms and partnerships to provide information and increase engagementTo employ outside professional agencies to assist from time to timePerson Specification Qualifications, Training, Knowledge and SkillsProven experience in senior management, preferably within the marina or maritime sectorStrong understanding of marina operations and maritime regulationsExperience in the maintenance of marine installations and shoreside infrastructureFinancial acumen with experience in budgeting and P&L managementExcellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skillsStrategic thinker with a hands‑on approach to problem‑solvingDemonstrable commitment to customer serviceDesirable qualifications, knowledge, skillsRYA or equivalent marine boat handling qualifications.Experience with marina management softwareMarine engineering experienceQualifications in the management of Health & SafetyKnowledge of environmental sustainability practices in marine settingsPersonal QualitiesLeadership - Able to guide the team toward long‑term goals while adapting to short term challenges.Integrity and accountability - Demonstrates honesty, transparency, and a strong sense of responsibility in all actions and decisions.Customer mindset - Genuinely values customer and all relationships and will strive to maintain the warm “Mayflower family” atmosphere.Resilience and composure - Maintains calm and focus under pressure, especially in emergency situations or busy periodsCollaborative and approachable - Builds strong relationships with customers, staff and stakeholders through open communication and mutual respect.Proactive and results oriented - Takes the initiative to identify opportunities and solve problems efficiently.
