Project Leader, Strengthening multi-parish Benefices programme

Overview We are seeking a Project Leader to deliver a change programme that will enable multi‑parish benefices in the Diocese of Ely to become thriving, mission‑focused communities. The role will involve guiding clergy and lay leaders through a five‑year transformation plan funded with up to £750,000, aligning with the Church of England’s strategic priorities. Responsibilities Work with Archdeacons to mentor and support clergy leading multi‑parish benefices. Collaborate with incumbents and Archdeaconry Mission & Pastoral Committees to simplify governance, leadership, and vision clarity. Oversee a Parish Support Officer (half‑time) who provides administrative support and line management for parish administrators. Direct up to 12 part‑time administrators in implementing change across selected benefices. Partner with the Director of Mission & Ministry to develop a pipeline preparing future clergy to lead multi‑parish benefices. Develop and test models and processes in consultation with local stakeholders to create welcoming, Christ‑like church spaces. Qualifications and Experience Significant experience leading large‑scale change initiatives. Deep understanding of the role of incumbent clergy within multi‑parish benefices; experience leading such a benefice is advantageous. Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel across rural benefices. Proven commitment to safeguarding best practice and ability to complete the Church of England confidential disclosure form. Key Outcomes Secure commitment from 12 benefices to participate in the programme by the end of year two. Achieve growth in 8 of the 12 benefices by year four, reaching new people and increasing numerical numbers. Maintain clergy wellbeing in participating benefices at or above diocesan standards. Ensure 10 of the 12 benefices adopt sustainable legal/administrative arrangements by 2031. Register all participating benefices with the Charity Commission by December 2031.
