Locum Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist This post is for a locum post for a period of six months. It is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist. This post will be offered with a six‑month contract. This post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the paediatric anaesthetic team at the Leeds Children’s hospital (LGI site) in Leeds. The successful applicant should hold accreditation in the FRCA in the Royal College of Anaesthetics or equivalent, and should be on the Specialist Register, or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director. The applicant should have established skills in paediatric anaesthesia and have undertaken at least 12 months advanced training in this area. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential. To develop and/or consolidate expertise in Paediatric Anaesthesia. To maintain and expand the excellence of teaching and research already established within the Trust. To support service plans for the specialty, taking account of the changes in clinical practice and new technologies available. To participate in and progress Clinical Governance. The Trust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with the University of Leeds, School of Medicine for the undergraduate teaching and all Consultant and medical staff are required to provide an appropriate contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme. The post-holder will be required to participate in the undergraduate teaching programme for the School of Medicine, University of Leeds, which is organised on a speciality or clinical area basis. The post-holder will be required to collaborate with clinical colleagues to deliver appropriate undergraduate teaching in accordance with the Trust contract with the NHS Executive in association with the University of Leeds. The appointee will be expected, with colleagues, to also contribute to the teaching of postgraduates, including the teaching programme for SpRs in anaesthesia in the Yorkshire Deanery. The posts will deliver 10 PAs supporting the anaesthetic team. The posts will be based at the Leeds General Infirmary or St James University Hospital depending upon service need and candidate's skills and experience. The successful applicant will join an existing team of over 150 Consultants. Job responsibilities Accountable Empowered All our actions and endeavours will be guided and evaluated through these values REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST General Training and Qualifications The appointee must hold accreditation in FRCA in the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent, and have completed higher specialist training (or equivalent) if currently in a training programme within the UK. Applicants should have completed a recognised training programme in Anaesthesia. Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director. Applicants must provide information regarding their status from the GMC and/or relevant Royal College at the time of application, in order for their application to be progressed further. Experience The appointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of anaesthesia and appropriate experience in paediatric anaesthesia. It is desirable that the candidates have experience in the conduct of clinical trials. Clinical Audit Mortality and morbidity meetings; Development and application of agreed clinical guidelines. This is to be included in allocated time in the individual's job plan as a supporting programmed activity. It would be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendance at the relevant departmental audit meeting(s) and that such attendance would be recorded (in accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy). In the discharge of these responsibilities the candidate will be expected to maintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing medical education. TEACHING The Trust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with the University of Leeds, School of Medicine for the undergraduate teaching and all Consultant and medical staff are required to provide an appropriate contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme. JOB PLAN AND WORKING ARRANGEMENTS The job plan review will take place annually, normally with the Clinical Director or Lead Clinician for Anaesthesia. There may be an interim review of the job plan where duties, responsibilities, accountability arrangements or objectives have changed or need to change significantly within the area. Proposed Job Plan The post consists of 10 PAs with 8.5 PAs of direct clinical care (DCC) and 1.5 PA of supporting professional activity (SPA). These 10 PAs will be delivered in anaesthesia. This job plan will fit together with colleagues' job‑plans with a careful rota of clinical sessions, to ensure robust cover. Accountability The post-holder is managerially accountable for the use of resources to the Chief Executive and professionally accountable to the Chief Medical Officer through Clinical Directors. This may be amended in the light of the Trusts management arrangements. Standards of Conduct and Behaviour He/she will be required to work to the standards set out by the General Medical Council in Good Medical Practice. This includes protecting patients when you believe that a doctor's or other colleagues' conduct, performance or health is a threat to them. If, after establishing the facts, it is necessary, you must follow the Trusts procedures in this matter and inform your Clinical Director or Medical Director in the first instance. Your general conduct at work should comply with the standards set out in the Trusts document on Appraisal, in particular the section on Core Behaviours. Appraisal will be a contractual requirement for all consultant staff and the Trust attaches considerable importance to this approach intended to be of benefit to individual consultants and to achieve the highest possible standards in the delivery of healthcare and services. Arrangements for annual appraisal will be managed through the medical director for workforce. Leave Arrangements All leave should be applied for in accordance with the Trusts Leave Policy, normally giving six weeks notice of any leave, other than in exceptional circumstances. Training During the course of your employment, you agree to undergo whatever training the Trust deems necessary. You will undertake all mandatory training required for the role. This may include, but is not limited to, induction training, professional development and safe working practices. Funding of such training will be in accordance with the Trusts Staff Development Policy. Continuing Medical Education The Trust fully supports the requirement for CME by the relevant Royal College and acknowledges that it is an essential component of a consultants' professional activities that will be reviewed during the appraisal process and revalidation. Time and financial support for these activities will be granted in accordance with the Trusts Leave Policy. Secretarial Support As part of the resource commitments to enable the post-holder to fulfil their job plan, the appointee will have access to such secretarial assistance as is required. An office with IT facilities (PC, email etc) will be provided. Health & Safety The Trust has a responsibility to provide a safe working environment for all staff. Person Specification Other Requirements Hold full GMC Registration with a licence to practice. Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: - CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) - CESR (or) - European Community Rights Qualifications Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice. Eligibility to work in the UK. Is up to date and fit to practise safely. Should have completed at least 12 months in a recognised training programme in paediatric anaesthesia. All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following: Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English. OR Achieved the minimum score of 7 across all 4 of the following categories in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (An overall minimum score of 7.5) OR Achieved the minimum Grade B across all 4 of the following categories in the Occupational English Test (OET) in medicine in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (You must provide your candidate number) Experience Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in paediatric anaesthesia. Specifically, he/she must demonstrate advanced training in paediatric anaesthesia. Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances. Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research. Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors. Experience of participation in regular clinical audit. Understanding of current issues in the NHS. Well organised and skilled in good time management. Effective interpersonal skills. Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team. Medically fit to fulfil ALL aspects of the post, and to be able to respond quickly to emergencies, as necessary. Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice). Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff. Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops. Attendance at recognised management course.
